Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on competition versus cooperation and presenting a clear, albeit extreme, personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, but their development is limited and occasionally superficial. For instance, the example of a car salesman receiving a bonus is briefly touched upon, and the counter-argument relies on an extreme and unsupported assertion about crime leading to death in Indonesia. While the prompt asks for relevant examples, the escalation to lethal violence lacks balance and fails to effectively support the broader academic argument. Consequently, the task response aligns best with Band 5, where ideas are somewhat under-developed and generalisations lack sufficient nuance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays a basic overall structure, divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised to separate the contrasting viewpoints. However, progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and repetitive sentence starters. Cohesive devices are sometimes used inaccurately or mechanically, as seen in phrases like 'On the contary' and 'To conclude and offer my position, there are convincing arguments and both for and against competition.' Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous use of pronouns in 'both of them proud of them self'. This level of cohesive control and mechanical linking corresponds to Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, struggling to meet the demands of an academic discussion. The student attempts some less common items such as 'perspectives' (spelled 'prespectives') and 'overwhelmed', but there are frequent word-formation and word-choice errors, including 'competition while study and work' instead of 'competing while studying and working', 'employe' for 'employees', 'cooperate' for 'cooperation', and 'envyous or jealous'. Spelling errors like 'contary', 'loose' (used for lose), and 'won' (used for win) also occur. These noticeable errors and limited lexical range place the response firmly at Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay shows a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty or ungrammatical, such as 'It gives motivation for them to become the winner and get reward like book and money' and 'Moreover, competition who already loose feeling envyous'. There are frequent errors in verb forms, plurals, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the competition give bad impact'). These errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and restrict the grammar score to Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on the presence of some basic communicative sentences.
