Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Opinions are divided on whether fierce competition in education, workplaces, and daily life drives progress or whether society would benefit more from a cooperative approach. While competition serves as a powerful catalyst for innovation and personal excellence, cooperation is equally vital for collective well-being and social harmony. In my view, rather than viewing these concepts as mutually exclusive, a balanced integration of both is essential for sustainable development.

On the one hand, advocates of competition argue that it acts as a primary driver of motivation and high performance. In academic and professional settings, the desire to outperform others pushes individuals to transcend their limits, hone their skills, and produce exceptional results. For instance, in corporate environments, performance-based incentives and competitive targets frequently spur productivity and technological innovation, enabling companies to remain competitive in a globalized market. Furthermore, competition prepares individuals for the real world, where resources are often limited, and resilience is required to navigate challenges.

On the other hand, an overemphasis on competition can foster a hyper-individualistic culture characterized by stress, burnout, and a breakdown of community bonds. Proponents of cooperation contend that working together creates a supportive environment where ideas can be shared freely without the fear of being undermined. In educational institutions, collaborative learning encourages empathy and allows students with diverse strengths to complement one another, resulting in a more holistic understanding of subjects. Similarly, in modern workplaces, complex global challenges often require cross-functional teamwork rather than isolated efforts, proving that collective synergy yields superior long-term outcomes.

In my opinion, the most effective approach lies in striking a harmonious balance between the two. Competition should be viewed as an internal metric for self-improvement rather than a zero-sum game against others, ensuring that ambition does not come at the expense of ethical conduct or mental health. At the same time, this drive must be tempered with a cooperative spirit, enabling people to leverage shared knowledge while striving for personal excellence

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the benefits of competition and the advantages of cooperation, while clearly presenting the student's own well-supported opinion. The position is well-developed and maintained throughout the essay. In the introduction, the writer establishes a nuanced stance, arguing that 'a balanced integration of both is essential for sustainable development.' This position is consistently maintained and extended with relevant examples in the body paragraphs, such as citing corporate performance incentives for competition and cross-functional teamwork for cooperation. The conclusion effectively synthesizes these points, ensuring that no part of the prompt is neglected. The ideas are extended and supported with appropriate examples and logical reasoning, meeting all the requirements of the higher band descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently linked, with a logical transition from discussing competition to exploring cooperation, and finally reaching a balanced synthesis. Cohesive devices are used effectively and naturally, such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Furthermore,' without feeling mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central topic. The introduction sets the stage, the body paragraphs deal with opposing views, and the final paragraph delivers a cohesive and thoughtful conclusion. Referencing and substitution are handled smoothly, maintaining a clear flow of ideas from beginning to end.

Lexical Resource: Band 8.0

The student demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary that allows for precision in expression. Less common lexical items are used skilfully throughout the essay, such as 'catalyst for innovation,' 'hyper-individualistic culture,' 'holistic understanding,' and 'zero-sum game.' Collocations are generally very natural, as seen in phrases like 'sustainable development,' 'collective synergy,' and 'ethical conduct.' There are only occasional minor inaccuracies or less common items that could be refined, but overall, the vocabulary is sophisticated and appropriate for an academic context. Spelling and word formation are completely accurate throughout the entire response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.5

The response exhibits a wide range of complex sentence structures used with a high degree of flexibility and accuracy. The majority of sentences are error-free, showcasing sophisticated syntactic control through varied dependent clauses, participial phrases, and conditional or concessive structures (e.g., 'While competition serves as a powerful catalyst... cooperation is equally vital...'). Punctuation is handled expertly to guide the reader through complex arguments. There are very few, if any, grammatical slips, and control over tense, aspect, and agreement is consistently maintained. This level of grammatical command easily aligns with the higher band descriptors for accuracy and variety.
