Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both competition and cooperation, and attempts to provide an opinion in the introduction. However, the development of ideas is severely hindered by confusion regarding the core concepts. Throughout the body paragraphs, terms like 'competition' and 'cooperate' are used interchangeably or contradictorily, such as in the phrase 'competition is a very good way to cooperate with others.' As a result, the arguments lack clarity and logical extension. While a position is stated, it is not consistently supported throughout the essay due to muddled reasoning. Therefore, the task response falls into the Band 5 category, where ideas are limited, under-developed, and not always clear to the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into distinct paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the overall progression of ideas is difficult to follow due to repetitive phrasing and a lack of clear logical links between sentences. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or incorrectly, such as the abrupt transition 'To commence with' followed by disjointed points about friends, relatives, and students. Referencing is frequently unclear, with pronouns like 'they' and 'some people' lacking unambiguous antecedents (e.g., 'they provide many helpful features'). Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is weak and repetitive, preventing the essay from achieving a higher band. These characteristics align closely with the Band 5 descriptor for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited range of vocabulary, relying heavily on basic, repetitive words such as 'competition', 'cooperate', 'people', and 'help'. There are numerous spelling errors throughout the text, including 'tooday'd', 'succesful', 'wirth', 'thier', 'workrs', 'fasion', and 'lifestyel'. Furthermore, word choices and collocations are frequently inaccurate or inappropriate, such as 'competition is a very useful at work' and 'competition level which people feel more stressful'. These lexical errors and the restricted vocabulary range often cause difficulty for the reader and prevent clear communication, placing the response firmly at Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at more complex structures are frequently faulty and ungrammatical, such as 'However, competition at school students should teach cooperate with their friends and teachers.' There are frequent errors in verb forms, prepositions, and sentence construction throughout the text (e.g., 'competition suggest many helpful ideas', 'help to other poor people', 'we try to cooperat them rather than copeting each other'). These frequent grammatical errors cause significant strain and difficulty for the reader, which is characteristic of the Band 5 descriptor for Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
