Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses both views regarding competition and cooperation, and briefly attempts to give a personal opinion in the introduction. However, there is an important negative impact on Task Achievement because the word count is only 221 words, failing to meet the minimum requirement of 250 words. Consequently, the conclusion is incomplete and abruptly cut off. While the main body paragraphs attempt to explore the topic by providing basic arguments and examples, such as competing with colleagues or working together in teams, the ideas are under-developed due to the restricted length and lack of full extension. Based on these descriptors, the response corresponds to a band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays some basic organization with a clear division into introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief concluding attempt. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore'. However, referencing and paragraphing show some inconsistencies and mechanical usage, such as 'competing against from other' and abrupt transitions. Additionally, the progression of ideas is disrupted because the final sentence of the essay trails off unfinished, indicating a breakdown in overall structural cohesion. Overall, the organizational framework is minimally functional, aligning closely with a band 5.0 descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, including words like 'competition', 'cooperate', 'independent', and 'relationship'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word formations throughout the text, such as 'cooperative is equally important' instead of 'cooperation', 'quikly' instead of 'quickly', and 'aranged' instead of 'arranged'. Repetition of phrases like 'quikly and efficiently' also occurs. These errors occasionally cause slight difficulty for the reader. The lexical control is indicative of a band 5.0 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but frequent grammatical errors restrict the grammatical range and accuracy. There are frequent issues with subject-verb agreement, missing articles, and incorrect word forms, such as 'competition at job or school', 'It helps them more confident', and 'students can easily communicate with other learners is a good thing'. Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent, with uncapitalized pronouns like 'i'. Although the meaning can generally be parsed, the frequency of errors is noticeable and aligns with the band 5.0 descriptors.
