Student answer (Band 4.5)

some people think that competitions at place of work, at school, and in daily life is a good thing while others suggest that we should try to cooperate more rather than competing against each other. competition is not a good and peaceful living so i think coperating can enhance the living condition more because its advantages outweigh that of competition

firstly, coperation promotes peace and unity . when there is coperation in school , work place and even in our daily activities it encourages good qualities. In a situation where there is competion there may be anger , hatered and other bad features which will discourage the members.

secondly, i think that when there is competition a lot of individuals may be looking at themselves less , some will turn to having low self esteem which can affect the standard of living . i think when an organisation, institution collaborate and work memenrrs will learn , enlightened and more sucessful for example a group of chatoty organisation helping the poor , the needy can teach the memehers how to talk in the public , how to think rationally

In addition, i think if cooperation is promted in a society there will be no competition in our daily life . government can create an awareness to educate the mass about the benefit of cooperation and how it can be promoted i think it will help to eradicate some bad qualities

In conclusion, cooperation outweighs competition i think it should be encouraged in school, work and in our daily life activities as it will help to improve good living habit.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt (the views on competition and cooperation) and presents a clear position that cooperation outweighs competition. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. For example, the student mentions that cooperation promotes peace and unity, but the supporting explanation remains overly general without deep elaboration. Similarly, the example of a charity organisation is introduced but not fully connected back to the central theme in a well-supported manner. While all parts of the task are touched upon, the arguments are somewhat under-developed, aligning best with Band 5 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the essay into paragraphs, and transitional markers such as 'firstly', 'secondly', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion' are used to signal progression. However, overall coherence is undermined by a lack of clear overall progression and poor sentence-to-sentence links. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the abrupt transition into the charity example. Furthermore, paragraphing is somewhat irregular, with indented blocks and spacing issues that detract from the structure. Cohesive devices are used mechanically rather than flexibly, which places this response firmly at Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text. Examples include 'competions' instead of competitions, 'coperating' instead of cooperating, 'hatered' instead of hatred, 'chatoty' instead of charitable, and 'memenrrs' instead of members. While the student attempts less common items like 'enlightened', 'rationally', and 'eradicate', these are overshadowed by a limited effective range and spelling errors that occasionally strain the reader. This performance aligns with Band 4 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and frequent run-on clauses without proper punctuation. There is a complete lack of capitalization for the pronoun 'i' and at the beginnings of sentences. Punctuation errors are pervasive, such as spaces preceding commas and periods. Attempts at complex sentences often result in grammatical faults and awkward phrasing, such as 'some will turn to having low self esteem' and 'collaborate and work memenrrs will learn'. Frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader, placing this essay at Band 4.
