Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 8.5)
Whether individuals should engage in fierce competition or focus on mutual cooperation is a subject of intense debate. While competitive environments can act as powerful catalysts for individual excellence, I believe that a healthy society must prioritize cooperation to achieve sustainable progress and maintain social harmony.
On the one hand, proponents of competition argue that it drives innovation and prevents stagnation. In the workplace, market rivalries compel companies to refine their products, which ultimately benefits consumers through better technology and lower prices. Similarly, in educational institutions, grading systems and academic rankings prepare students for a meritocratic world. This framework incentivizes individuals to push past their comfort zones, discover their personal limits, and cultivate resilience. Without the desire to outperform others, human progress across industries and disciplines might slow down considerably.
On the other hand, the case for cooperation is rooted in human psychology and collective efficiency. Complex modern challenges, such as economic crises or environmental degradation, cannot be resolved by isolated entities working in silos. They require cross-functional teamwork and the open sharing of knowledge. Furthermore, an environment that overemphasizes winning often breeds a toxic atmosphere, leading to severe anxiety, burnout, and a lack of trust among peers. In contrast, collaborative environments foster psychological safety and empathy. When people work together toward a shared vision, they build resilient communities where the strong support the vulnerable, resulting in a more cohesive social fabric.
In my opinion, while competition has its merits in sparking initial motivation, cooperation is fundamentally superior for long-term success. A progressive society should aim to balance these forces by embedding competition within a collaborative framework. For example, businesses should encourage internal teamwork while competing externally in the market, and schools should reward both individual accountability and group achievements.
In conclusion, although competition is an effective tool for inspiring personal growth and industry breakthroughs, cooperation remains the bedrock of humanity's greatest achievements. Striking a balance between the two ensures that we achieve excellence without sacrificing our collective well-being.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response covers all parts of the prompt exceptionally well, offering a thorough discussion of both the advantages of competition and the benefits of cooperation before presenting a clear, well-reasoned personal opinion. Ideas are fully developed and supported with relevant examples, such as how market rivalries in the workplace drive product innovation and how collaborative environments foster psychological safety during complex modern crises. The stance is maintained consistently throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the arguments without introducing redundant information. To reach the highest tier, the response would benefit from an even deeper exploration of the nuances regarding how these two forces interact in daily life, moving beyond the workplace and educational settings to touch more explicitly on interpersonal dynamics.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
Ideas are logically sequenced with a clear and seamless overall progression from the introduction, through the body paragraphs, to the well-crafted conclusion. All aspects of cohesion are expertly managed, utilizing a wide variety of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In contrast' naturally and without mechanical repetition. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each body paragraph dedicated to a distinct perspective and clearly signalled topic sentences. Referencing throughout the text is exceptionally clear, ensuring the reader can follow the argumentative thread effortlessly. Minor adjustments to transitional phrases could make the flow even more unobtrusive, bringing the organizational structure into the absolute highest category of cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 8.5
The writer demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary, employing skilful use of uncommon and sophisticated items such as 'catalysts for individual excellence', 'meritocratic world', 'isolated entities working in silos', and 'cohesive social fabric'. Word choice and collocation are handled with a high degree of precision, reflecting a natural control of style. There are only occasional minor inaccuracies that do not impede communication. To push further into the top band, the writer could incorporate even more idiomatic language or rarer lexical chunks that sound entirely native-like, though the current range is already remarkably strong and effective for an academic context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.5
The essay displays a wide range of complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses, participial phrases, and concessive structures like 'While competitive environments can act as powerful catalysts...'. The majority of sentences are completely error-free, demonstrating excellent control of grammar, tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation. Prepositions and articles are used accurately within complex grammatical patterns. There are only very occasional minor slips, which are typical of high-level performance. To maintain absolute perfection across all sentences, the writer could occasionally vary clause lengths even further, but the current grammatical command is already exceptionally robust and precise.
