Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially, which aligns with the lower-level descriptors. The writer attempts to discuss both views on competition and cooperation and mentions a personal opinion in the introduction, but the conclusion is incomplete, leaving the final stance underdeveloped. The main body paragraphs present some relevant ideas, such as knowing one's productivity and facing undue stress, but these ideas remain limited and lack sufficient extension or detailed examples. For instance, the reference to a research study in India is vague and lacks concrete supporting details. To improve, the writer needs to ensure all parts of the prompt, including a fully stated and defended personal opinion, are thoroughly developed throughout the essay with extended explanations and clear examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organization evident through the division into paragraphs and the use of transitional markers like 'To elaborate it in detail' and 'In conclusion'. However, the overall progression is limited, and the abrupt end of the essay prevents a coherent completion of the argument. Cohesive devices are sometimes used mechanically or inaccurately, such as starting a paragraph with 'whilst, it has a range of pros', which disrupts the logical flow of ideas. Referencing and paragraphing show basic structure, but lack smooth transitions between sentences. To move forward, the writer should focus on creating a clearer logical progression between paragraphs, using a wider variety of cohesive ties more naturally, and ensuring every paragraph is fully completed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The lexical resource displays a limited but minimally adequate range for addressing the prompt. The writer attempts to use less common vocabulary items such as 'pivotal role', 'plethora', and 'proficency', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable spelling errors, including 'conteporary', 'Compition', 'competing', 'myrid', 'proficency', 'appriciation', and 'whic'. Furthermore, word choices and collocations are occasionally awkward, such as 'having compition against others' instead of 'competing against others'. These errors require the reader to occasionally pause, though communication is generally maintained. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their vocabulary range, improve spelling accuracy, and focus on natural word combinations and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The grammar demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on basic forms while attempts at complex sentences frequently contain errors. There are frequent grammatical issues throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement errors like 'workerss who usually compete with one another they tend to work hard', missing prepositions, and structural flaws such as 'they diligently in order to win' which lacks a main verb. Punctuation and article usage also show persistent inaccuracies. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher level of grammatical control. To improve, the writer should focus on mastering simple sentence construction, ensuring every sentence has a complete verb, and reducing errors in basic grammatical patterns.
