Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response responds to the task only minimally and fails to meet the word count requirement, containing only 137 words compared to the minimum of 250 words. Furthermore, the essay is incomplete and trails off mid-sentence at the end of the second body paragraph. While the writer attempts to discuss both views regarding competition and cooperation and touches upon a personal opinion in the introduction, the ideas remain severely under-developed and limited. The lack of a concluding paragraph and the truncated nature of the response prevent any full exploration of the prompt, placing this criterion at a minimal level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response shows some basic organization through the use of standard paragraph breaks and transitional phrases such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. However, there is no clear overall progression due to the abrupt ending of the text. Cohesive devices are occasionally used, but referencing is sometimes unclear, and the mechanical nature of the linking phrases becomes evident. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph is incomplete, which disrupts the logical flow and overall structure of the essay.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for conveying basic ideas about competition and cooperation. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'botn' instead of both, 'they' instead of their, 'acedmic' instead of academic, 'Similarli' instead of similarly, 'bonusrs' instead of bonuses, 'porductivity' instead of productivity, 'apple an samsung' with capitalization errors, 'product' instead of produce, 'humen' instead of human, 'Nomjor' instead of no major, 'hiownto' instead of how to, and 'resoect' instead of respect. These errors sometimes cause difficulty for the reader, though the general topic remains discernible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few flawed attempts at complex ones. Frequent errors are present, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'the competition is' and 'the students how compete', as well as missing articles and prepositions. For example, the sentence 'At work a different cooperative environment reduce stress' contains multiple errors in punctuation, noun phrase formation, and verb agreement. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader, reflecting a restricted control of grammatical forms.
