IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In my point of view, both views have there own specialization and both have their own benifits and advantages. There is also very competetion in every sector like offices, in schools, and many other work sectors. But there are also many people who cooperate with each other in their work.
Firstly, competition is the thing that the people compare their self with others and they want to cross that person in any way either in schools or in offices they want to make their selves (The Best). So they try very hard and make their best in competing their competitor. The good thing is that in this race the make thier selves very outstanding and able to some thing and they learn a lot of new skills and ideas that increases their position. For example in our schools they used to make the Head boy of the school who was very puntual and regular and well decipilned student, and also who took first position in the class. So 2 students in our class were competitors and they have their full effort to take the shash of head boy.
On the other hands, cooperation is the very good thing that every one should adopt this thing and cooperate with their surrounding people. The thing is that by cooperating with each other the enviorment of the office or any other place where you work or even study will be very nice, peaceful, and loving. Every one will compelete their work and their will be no jelousey to other. For example, in my university the transpoters were very cooperative with each other. If some one is not available or he is ill then the manage his route by dividing stops to other buses and take the students of that route.
In the end, I will say that cooperation is good thing and everyone should adopt this because by helping and cooperating with others make the enviorment good and icrease the love for eachother.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both competition and cooperation and providing a personal opinion. However, the ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed, which is characteristic of this level. While the writer attempts to present arguments for both sides—such as how competition leads to skill acquisition and striving for goals, and how cooperation fosters a peaceful environment—the explanation relies heavily on personal anecdotes that lack depth and broader analytical extension. For instance, the example about the school head boy and university bus transporters are illustrative but remain superficial, failing to fully explore the broader societal or psychological implications of the two concepts. The writer's position is discernible throughout the text, but the arguments remain basic and would benefit from greater elaboration and more robust supporting examples to reach higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a recognizable essay structure with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, and a concluding statement. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different main ideas, as seen with the clear transition from discussing competition to discussing cooperation. However, cohesion at the sentence level is sometimes mechanical or faulty. The writer relies on basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'On the other hands', and 'In the end', and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as ambiguous pronoun usage (e.g., 'the make thier selves very outstanding and able to some thing'). While logical progression is present, the connections between sentences feel repetitive rather than fluidly developed, keeping the organizational quality at this level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic message. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary related to the prompt, such as 'specialization', 'competetion', 'cooperate', and 'enviorment', but these attempts are frequently marred by spelling mistakes and lexical inaccuracies. There are notable spelling errors throughout the text, including 'benifits', 'competetion', 'decipilned', 'transpoters', 'jelousey', and 'icrease'. Word choices are sometimes unnatural or imprecise, such as 'take the shash' instead of 'earn the sash' or 'manage his route' instead of 'cover his route'. While the reader can generally understand the intended meaning, these noticeable errors and limited lexical flexibility restrict the score at this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic compound forms. When the writer attempts more complex structures, frequent errors emerge, such as in the opening sentence: 'In my point of view, both views have there own specialization and both have their own benifits and advantages.' There are frequent issues with subject-verb agreement, articles, prepositions, and verb tenses throughout the text, such as 'there is also very competetion', 'people who cooperate with each other in their work' where tense consistency fluctuates, and awkward phrasing like 'and they want to make their selves (The Best).' Punctuation is also basic and occasionally intrusive. These frequent structural errors can cause some difficulty and hesitation for the reader, fitting the descriptors for this grammar level.
