Student answer (Band 6.0)

Competition has been regarded as a positive object by a number of people, at workplace, educational institution and even in daily life situations, while a vocal minority believes cooperation have more positive influence compared to competition with acquaintances. In my view, competition holds much significance as it boosts motivation in individuals, both professionally and academically.

The competition can have a positive impact in society, where a large group of people are lazy and lathergic, they mostly try to proscratinate the task uptil last day. In contrast, if there is a competition among students and even employees in academia and workplace, respectively, they will constantly try to improve themselves, which results in both their personal and professional growth. Take for example a company who gives bonuses or rewards to employees who make better presentations, than everyone will try and make the best version, it with both improve their skills and the quality of content, and the company will also get an advantage out of it.

On contrary, competition can have some darastic impacts socially, such as two people competing for the same position can develop hatred for each other over time, if one of them is recieving less appraisal than the other one. For instance, a student who is already in a class and always remain on top, but if another student of the same mental caliber takes admission in the same class, and recieves more appreciation than the first one, the first student might feel neglected, and ultimately develop strong repulsive feelings for the other one. Therefore, another factor cooperation should be bring into the situation, to develop positivity among individuals.

At last it can be concluded that, competition should be colaborated with cooperation to decrease its negative effects, and bring out the positive aspects of the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the benefits of competition and the contrasting view favoring cooperation, while also presenting a clear personal position in the introduction. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the second paragraph offers a relevant example regarding bonuses and performance at work, other points remain somewhat under-developed or rely on generalisations, such as the claim that a large group of people are lazy and procrastinate until the last day. The arguments regarding social friction caused by competition are introduced in the third paragraph with an example of a top student, but the analysis does not fully explore the nuances of both perspectives before concluding. To reach a higher level, the ideas need more thorough extension, deeper support, and a more balanced exploration of both sides throughout the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different facets of the argument, such as the benefits of competition followed by its drawbacks. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or slightly faulty due to awkward transitional phrases like 'On contrary' and 'At last it can be concluded that'. Referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression between sentences occasionally stumbles, such as the sudden jump from workplace laziness to student motivation in the second paragraph. To improve further, the writer needs to employ a wider range of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure smoother transitions between contrasting ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'professional growth', 'appraisal', and 'repulsive feelings'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form throughout the text. Examples include 'positive object' instead of 'positive phenomenon', 'lathergic' and 'proscratinate' (spelling errors for 'lethargic' and 'procrastinate'), 'uptil' (instead of 'until'), 'darastic' (instead of 'drastic'), and 'recieving' (spelling error). Furthermore, phrases like 'cooperation should be bring into the situation' demonstrate awkward word formation and collocation. These inaccuracies do not entirely impede communication, but they restrict the score, as they reveal a lack of precise control over less common vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to vary grammatical structures with clauses introduced by 'while', 'where', and 'if'. Nevertheless, there are several errors in grammar, punctuation, and agreement that persist throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues such as 'cooperation have more positive influence', missing articles or incorrect prepositional usage in phrases like 'at workplace' (instead of 'in the workplace'), and comma splices or run-on structures, such as in the second paragraph where multiple clauses are strung together without proper punctuation. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they prevent the writer from achieving a higher level of grammatical control.
