IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The are competing views on whether competition in different aspects of life is good thing or cooperation is a more suitable option. Although the opposing argument has some validity but i believe cooperation is more logical.

The rationale behind the first opinion is that when people compete with each other it brings innovation. If competition ends then life will be static. It was because of competition that we have so much better products. For example, owing to competition between different big tech companies we are able to produce many advance ai models. These ai models are making our lives easy.

The alternative position is cooperation which is also my position too. While it is partially true that competition brings innovation but thats not the whole story. When people cooperate with each other then society moves as a whole. Cooperation teches us compassion while only competition brings inequality to the society. For example, big tech companies are competing but this whole competition is also accumulating the wealth in the hands of few. We have seen the incease in class differences because of competition without cooperation.

Cooperation gives us sense of humanity. At school when we share our pencil with another student, it gives us happiness. Cooperating creates a bond between humans and we need it as we are emotional beings and have feelings for each other.

In conclusion, competition alone cannot satisfy the emotional part of humans. We need cooperation more as it is natural to us. It is after some negative elements corrputs us which makes us selfish.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the benefits of competition and the importance of cooperation, while also presenting your own clear opinion that cooperation is more logical. However, some ideas are developed more fully than others. For instance, the paragraph explaining how competition drives innovation through technological advancements is quite specific and well-illustrated with the example of AI models. In contrast, other arguments, such as the idea that cooperation teaches compassion, are somewhat generalized and could have been extended with more depth or a concrete personal example. Overall, your position remains consistent from the introduction through to the conclusion, ensuring you meet the requirements for addressing all parts of the task with relevant, if occasionally unevenly developed, ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introducing the topic, examining competition, presenting cooperation, and concluding with a final perspective. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each distinct argument and viewpoint. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or repetitive, particularly in the way sentences are linked using basic transitional expressions. Referencing is generally clear, but some cohesive ties could be managed more flexibly to avoid a rigid sentence-to-sentence flow. To move further up, you could integrate more varied and subtle cohesive devices to connect your ideas more seamlessly throughout the body paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your arguments about competition and cooperation. You attempt less common vocabulary items, such as 'innovation', 'inequality', and 'compassion', which fit the context appropriately. However, there are some noticeable word choice, collocation, and spelling errors that prevent a higher score. For example, expressions like 'The are competing views' contain a typographical error, and phrases such as 'teches us' (teaches) and 'corrputs us' (corrupts) show spelling inaccuracies. Furthermore, some collocations could be more precise, such as 'accumulating the wealth in the hands of few' instead of 'concentrating wealth'. These minor slips do not seriously impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision and careful proofreading.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as concessive clauses starting with 'Although' and 'While'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, but they rarely impede communication. For instance, you miss an article in phrases like 'is good thing' (is a good thing) and make an error with subject-verb agreement or auxiliary verbs in 'Although the opposing argument has some validity but i believe', where the double connector 'although' and 'but' is used incorrectly alongside a lowercase pronoun. Additionally, pluralization and preposition usage occasionally slip. Despite these errors, your sentences show a reasonable attempt at complexity, and your control over punctuation is generally sufficient to keep your meaning clear.
