Student answer (Band 6.0)

Competition and cooperation are both impoortant parts of modern life. Some people believe that competition is useful at school, work and in daily activities, while others think that people should cooperate more. This essay will discuss both views, and i believe that a balance between competition and cooperation is the best approach. On the one hand ,competition can encourage people to work harder and achieve their goals. For example, students may study harder when they complete with their classmates to get better grades.Similarly, employees may try to improve their performance when there is competition at work.Competition can also help people develop new skills and become more confident. In business, companies compete with each other, which can lead to better products and services for customers. On other hand, cooperation is also very important because many tasks cannot be completed successfully by one person. When people work together, thry can share ideas, skills ans responsibilities. For instance, students can work in groups to complete a school project, and workers can cooperate to finish an important task.Cooperation can also create better relationships and reduce unnecessary stress and conflict. In my opinion, both competation and cooperation are necessary, but cooperation should be given more importance.Healthy competition can motivate people, but too much competition can create pressure and make people focus only on winning. Therefore, people should compete in a positive way while also helping and supporting others. In conclusion, competition can motivate people to improve themselves, whereas cooperation helps people achieve common goals.I believe that using both in a balanced way is the best solution for schools, workplaces and daily life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both the benefits of competition and cooperation, and includes a clear position in the introduction and conclusion. However, the length requirement is not met, as the response is slightly below the minimum word count of 250 words, sitting at 239 words. While the main ideas are relevant and generally supported—such as mentioning students studying harder and businesses improving products—some ideas remain somewhat under-developed. For instance, the discussion on how cooperation reduces stress and conflict is stated briefly without concrete elaboration or a specific example, which is characteristic of this performance level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from the introduction, through the discussion of each view, to the final conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate the different viewpoints effectively. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or faulty due to spacing errors between words and sentences, such as missing spaces after commas and periods in phrases like 'modern life. Some people' and 'one hand ,competition'. While cohesive devices like 'For example', 'Similarly', and 'Therefore' are employed to guide the reader, referencing and transitional flow could be smoother to achieve a higher standard of logical organisation.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-related terms such as 'cooperation', 'competition', 'performance', and 'common goals'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are accompanied by noticeable spelling errors, including 'impoortant', 'complete' instead of 'compete', 'competation', and 'thry'. Additionally, there are minor word-choice and word-form inaccuracies that do not seriously impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary score from reaching a higher level of precision and flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising structures such as conditional and subordinate clauses like 'When people work together, they can share ideas...' and 'students may study harder when they complete with their classmates'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly missing spaces after punctuation marks and occasional awkward capitalization or article usage. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the core meaning of the sentences to remain clear throughout the essay.
