Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially. While the writer attempts to discuss both views on competition and cooperation and gives a personal opinion, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the discussion on why competition is good relies on repetitive statements like 'it boosts his stamina for how to deal with the problems' without much extension or specific contextual examples in the main body paragraphs. The position is stated, but the arguments lack depth and the conclusion of the second paragraph drifts into general advice rather than a cohesive continuation of the prompt. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to fully extend and support each viewpoint with well-developed, relevant arguments and clear examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some organisation evident in the division of paragraphs, but the essay lacks a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are frequently inadequate, inaccurate, or overused, creating a disjointed reading experience. For example, the transition between sentences relies on basic conjunctions or repetitive phrasing such as 'So they become able' and 'Many peoples in the world thought'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal logical links between sentences are often missing or faulty, making it difficult to follow the flow of thought smoothly. To improve coherence, the writer should employ a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices and ensure clear logical sequencing from one idea to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The lexical resource is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, seen in phrases like 'activities plays a very important role' and 'do anything which they want to do'. There are noticeable errors in word form, choice, and spelling, such as 'Comprtition', 'cometing', and 'thscondition', which cause some difficulty for the reader and impede smooth communication. The writer attempts some less common words, but inappropriate collocations and inaccurate word choices prevent precision. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their vocabulary range, use word forms accurately, and practice proper spelling and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. The majority of sentences are simple, and attempts at complex structures are often faulty, leading to frequent errors. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'activites plays', missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and poor punctuation like run-on sentences and comma splices, as seen in 'These lines tells us about the activities at school and in our life.I believe...'. These frequent errors can cause difficulty and strain for the reader trying to interpret the meaning. To progress, the writer needs to work on mastering basic sentence boundaries, verb forms, and incorporating a greater variety of accurate complex sentence patterns.
