Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views on competition and cooperation, and the writer clearly states their own opinion that competition makes a person strong. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed. For instance, the arguments regarding industry standards and hiring practices are presented in a very generalized, repetitive manner without sufficient extension. While the writer attempts to support their position with examples, such as mentioning doctors or business management, these points lack clarity and fail to be fully articulated. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to present fully developed ideas with relevant, well-supported explanations and clear examples that directly reinforce the main arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organization present, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing an attempt at a logical layout. However, the response lacks a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are frequently inadequate, inaccurate, or overused, and referencing is often unclear, which disrupts the flow of ideas. For example, transitional phrases and conjunctions are used awkwardly, such as linking clauses with repetitive or confusing structures like 'moreover' and 'because' without adequate punctuation or logical transitions. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs feels disjointed. To improve, the writer must ensure that sentences flow logically from one to the next using a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices, alongside clear referencing to guide the reader seamlessly through the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, reflecting a basic range that is only minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form that cause some difficulty for the reader throughout the text. Instances such as spelling mistakes ('coperate', 'trngs', 'eqaully', 'competiton', 'benificial'), incorrect word forms ('honour' instead of owner, 'buisnees'), and awkward collocations ('top noach', 'beated everyone') impede smooth communication. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but inaccurate usage restricts precision. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to standard spelling and word forms, and use vocabulary with greater accuracy and appropriateness for academic contexts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The text displays a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences or faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that often cause difficulty for the reader and can obscure the intended meaning. Examples of grammatical issues include subject-verb agreement errors ('make a person', 'everyone shuld coperate', 'person depend'), missing articles ('on what bases doctor are qualified'), incorrect preposition use ('in terms of doctors'), and run-on sentences lacking proper terminal punctuation. To move up to the next level, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence forms, improve control over basic grammatical patterns such as tense consistency and agreement, and apply correct punctuation to make the writing much clearer and more accurate.
