Student answer (Band 5.0)
Nowadays, competition at workplaces, educational institutes and daily life practices has become a hot topic of discussion. The one side people appreciates it while, the other are against it. In this essay both of these perspectives will be explained followed by appropiate examples.
Firstly, the competition at office and academic levels not only enhances the productivity but also generate multiple ideas related to single problem or task assigned. For example, when collegues and fellows are at contest with each other, in quest to get better form other they come up with multiple ideas and thier performance enhance. In daily life also, competition help us to beome a better person.
However, competition at practical and educational places leads to more negative consequences as compared to positive ones. For example, it thrives the sense of hate towards one another. When people come to know about that they are in competition, they do every possible thing to win. This in results include hating fellows for no genuine reason. Also, competition demotivates the agenda of teamwork, collegues stop supporting and helping each other despite if one needs help genuinely. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You introduce the topic and give relevant points about competition, including increased productivity and ideas, as well as hostility and reduced teamwork. However, the task asks you to discuss both competition and cooperation and give your own opinion. Cooperation is mentioned mainly as something competition discourages, and your personal position is not clearly stated. The response also ends abruptly at “people forget the ethics,” leaving the argument and conclusion incomplete. In addition, the response is 45 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to explain and support your ideas. Develop each view with a specific example, state clearly which approach you favour, and finish with a conclusion that answers the question.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph presenting benefits, and a paragraph describing drawbacks. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “However,” and “Furthermore” help signal the direction of the discussion. However, the overall progression is incomplete because there is no concluding paragraph, and the final sentence stops before the point is finished. Some links between ideas are also unclear: the move from workplace and academic competition to “daily life” is brief, while the second paragraph combines several consequences without developing their relationship. Use clearer paragraph focus, connect each example directly to its main point, and add a conclusion to make the argument feel complete.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “productivity,” “multiple ideas,” “teamwork,” and “ethics,” which helps communicate the general subject. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “negative consequences.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, sometimes making the meaning harder to follow. For example, “daily life practices,” “in quest to get better form other,” and “thrives the sense of hate” do not express the intended ideas naturally. Spelling errors such as “collegues,” “thier,” and “beome” are noticeable. Build a more accurate range of collocations and check spelling carefully; the suggestions below offer practical alternatives.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast introduced by “However” and the clause beginning “When people come to know…”. Nevertheless, control is inconsistent, and errors in agreement, articles, sentence construction, and punctuation occur frequently enough to affect clarity. Examples include “The one side people appreciates it,” “competition help us,” and “not only enhances … but also generate,” where the subjects and verbs do not agree. The opening also has an awkwardly punctuated contrast, and the final sentence is incomplete. Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and correctly matched verb, and use complex structures only when you can control their grammar and punctuation.
