Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some people think that competition in everything make us do better while other think diversely. I am going to give detailed review on these arguments.

Initially, some people deem that competition is very important in life. They assume that people can do their task better if they compete with each other. They habitually try to compete in every work they do, suppose if their children are studying, they start juxtaposing them with other children.

Some people presume that competing is not good. it has negative impact on society. By doing this type of things people are spreading negativity in this society.

In my opinion, comparing people is not a good thing. Everyone is perfect in different thing and in doing different task. People are spreading negativity in this society by bringing such old fashioned things. People should focus on them and try to improve their capabilities. People have different capabilities and have natural aptitude. Nowadays it is very common that parent pressure their child to score better and become 1st in everything but it is not possible, the main reason of this circumstance is every child can not become 1st.

One of my friend is not good in studies. His parents always try their best to make him better in studies but he don not listen because he has interest in sports, at last he wins and become a famous cricketer and earn more than enough, his parents are very happy now. He is also very happy in his life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear personal view that comparison and pressure to compete can be harmful, and the example of your friend becoming a successful cricketer supports the idea that children have different strengths. However, the task asks you to discuss both competition and cooperation, and the second view is only briefly described as having a “negative impact”; cooperation itself is not explained. The benefits of competition are also mentioned only generally, without a developed example or explanation. Your position is present, but it becomes clear mainly in the opinion paragraph, and some claims—such as “Everyone is perfect”—are too broad to support the argument effectively. Develop both sides more evenly and explain how cooperation can benefit people.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, discussion of each view, your opinion, and a personal example. This helps readers identify the main stages of your answer. However, progression between ideas is sometimes weak. The opening promises a “detailed review,” but the discussion remains brief, and the paragraph beginning “In my opinion” repeats the claim about spreading negativity from the previous paragraph. Linking phrases such as “Initially” and “In my opinion” are used, but connections between claims and supporting details are not always clear. The final cricket example is relevant, though it would be better integrated by explicitly explaining how it supports your view. Reduce repetition and use clearer links between each reason and its example.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “competition,” “capabilities,” “natural aptitude,” and “pressure,” and the reader can generally understand your main message. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the argument harder to follow. For example, “think diversely” does not clearly express the opposing view, while “juxtaposing them with other children” is an awkward way to describe comparing children. Phrases such as “doing this type of things” and “old fashioned things” are vague, and “become 1st” is not idiomatic in this context. Aim for precise expressions such as “compare children with their peers” and “cooperate to achieve shared goals,” and check word forms and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a conditional idea in “people can do their task better if they compete with each other” and a relative clause in “a famous cricketer and earn more than enough.” However, errors are frequent, and some sentences are difficult to process. Examples include “competition in everything make us do better” (subject–verb agreement), “other think” (plural agreement), and “parent pressure their child” (number and verb form). The sentence beginning “Nowadays it is very common” runs on and contains several connected ideas without clear punctuation. There are also errors such as “he don not listen” and “his parents are very happy now,” where tense and agreement need attention. Practise accurate sentence boundaries and check agreement, articles, and verb forms.
