Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Everyone has different opinion on competition and cooperative activity, but according to my point of view and experience competition is better than cooperate, while getting a good job or promotion in any field of life.

On the one hand, in this fast and modern era, everyone want to achieve a higher goal of life, and to see himselves at top of every opportunity, but for getting a high goal of life, you must need to follows anyone's successful pattern.

A person who has succeed in his life, For example, if we talk about job work so from first day you can not get the post of manager, firstly you have to get experience about the work, and without following to the seniour, you can not get proper guidance. Same example is fitted at school, on the first day at school, you have to enrolled in first class, you can not enter in 10 class directly, you have need the cooperation of you teacher and seniour school mates, and completing 1 to 9 classes the you can enrolled yourself in 10 class.

On the other hand, If we talk about daily life routine, so in modern era every one want to get better job as compare to their colleagues. Like me, when i was selected for the post revenew field staff in revenew department, then we are 40 friends the wasa selected at the same time, but right now i want to got promotion from revenew field staff to revenew officier.

There are two ways to get promotion in the department, First, you can elocate directly through commission and second is to pass the departmental exam. That's why enrolled for the departmental exam and do work hard day and night. and after 6 months i achieved my goal.

In conclusion, competition has more importance as compare to cooperate, because with the cooperation you are helping to the other people and by competition you are crossing to the other poeple. So I thing we should focus on over goal rather than friends.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear preference for competition in the introduction and conclusion, and your promotion story provides a relevant personal example. However, the task asks you to discuss both competition and cooperation, and the cooperation side is not developed as a distinct viewpoint. The school example mainly explains progression through classes and the need for guidance, rather than why cooperation is valuable; the workplace example focuses on your individual effort to gain promotion. Your conclusion also reduces cooperation to “helping other people” without considering its benefits or limits. To strengthen the response, explain a genuine advantage of cooperation, such as sharing skills to solve problems, then compare it with competition and support your position with a more directly relevant explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a conclusion, so there is an identifiable overall structure. However, the progression between ideas is difficult to follow: the first body paragraph moves from ambition to copying successful people, then to school enrolment, without clearly connecting these points to competition or cooperation. The second paragraph introduces daily life but shifts quickly to a detailed promotion account. Linking phrases such as “so,” “for example,” and “that’s why” are repeated or do not always show the intended relationship. Give each paragraph one clear purpose, use topic sentences that directly address the two views, and make references such as “this” or “these benefits” explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “competition,” “cooperation,” “promotion,” “guidance,” and “departmental exam,” and the personal example communicates a recognisable workplace context. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make meaning less clear, such as “crossing to the other people,” “higher goal of life,” and “post revenew field staff.” Spelling and word-form errors, including “seniour,” “officier,” and “elocate,” are also noticeable. Aim for more precise phrases that express the intended ideas, such as “gain an advantage over others,” “career goals,” and “apply for promotion.” Check spelling and use a dictionary or collocation examples to confirm natural combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt longer sentences and use some subordinate clauses, for example, “when I was selected for the post…” and “because with the cooperation…,” but complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the response difficult to read. Examples include “everyone want,” “you must need to follows,” “you have to enrolled,” and “I want to got promotion.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also inconsistent, particularly in the long school example and the sentence beginning “A person who has succeed…”. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, verb patterns after modal verbs and “have to,” and consistent past-tense forms in your personal story. Breaking long sentences into shorter, complete clauses will also improve clarity.
