Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this contemporary world, competition has been become a notable trend. Owing to this, it is argued that people should encourage and attain competition while working, studying, or in daily life. However, opponents state that cooperation and coordination are far important, and should be the primary goal, instead of focusing on competition. This essay will analyze both perspectives before making a concrete conclusion and stating my opinion.

To begin with the former viewpoint, competition is an essential ingredient for the cognitive development of humans. Since competition promotes the sense of race, it leads people to grow independently in a more polished way. Moreover, it also helps a lot in confidence building and acheiving goals instantly, when someone finds a competitor against him. For example, during my early school education, I always obtained 90% grades, which perhaps, could not be possible if I did not compete with my fellow students. Likewise, competition also plays a crucial role in work to be more prominant in the business community. As a result, mental development, personal growth and particular targets can only be acheived if people start to compete with each other.

Conversely, competition is discouraged by some people, because they think that cooperation holds much importance rather than indulging into individual goals. Furthermore, complex and complicated problems can only be solved by means of coordination. For instance, during Covid-19, the Government of Pakistan and all other political parties were on the same page in order to eradicate the widespread outbreak of Coronavirus. Thus, team work plays a vital role when it comes to accomplish difficult duties.

As far as I am concerned, I totally agree with the latter perspective, because it refelects how much a state, a company or a family is capable while aiming at collective goals.

In conclusion, although competition has been become necessarily increasing in workplace, schools and daily life, coordination should be the primary preference of everyone when it come to solve problematic challanges.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both sides and state a clear preference for cooperation: the competition paragraph gives reasons and a personal school example, while the cooperation paragraph uses the Covid-19 response as support. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The benefits of competition are explained mainly through personal achievement, and the claim that it helps someone achieve goals “instantly” is not clarified. The cooperation side is shorter and focuses on solving complex problems without exploring other settings named in the prompt, such as school or the workplace. Your opinion appears clearly near the end, but it would be stronger if introduced earlier and supported with a specific reason or example. Develop each view more evenly and explain how your examples prove your claims.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, a statement of your opinion, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Conversely,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the discussion, and the examples are placed alongside the relevant arguments. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. At times, however, transitions feel formulaic, and the final opinion paragraph is very brief and somewhat detached from the preceding discussion. Some links between claims are asserted rather than explained, particularly the move from competition to “mental development, personal growth and particular targets.” Build clearer connections between each reason and its consequence, and integrate your opinion into the main discussion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “cognitive development,” “coordination,” “collective goals,” and “widespread outbreak,” which helps convey the main ideas. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing. However, the range is not consistently controlled: some expressions are unnatural or imprecise, such as “sense of race,” “achieving goals instantly,” and “primary preference.” Spelling errors, including “acheiving,” “prominant,” and “refelects,” are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Repetition of “competition,” “cooperation,” and “important” also limits flexibility. Aim for natural collocations and precise wording rather than elevated phrases that do not fit the meaning; proofreading spelling and choosing simpler, accurate alternatives would make the argument clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including subordinate clauses beginning with “Since” and “because,” and the main ideas are generally understandable. However, complex structures are not consistently controlled, and several errors affect accuracy. For example, “competition has been become” uses an incorrect verb form, while “when it come to solve” has agreement and verb-pattern problems. In “cooperation and coordination are far important,” the comparative structure is incomplete, and “if people start to compete” does not fit smoothly with the preceding claim. There are also awkward article and preposition patterns. Work on reliable verb forms, agreement, and constructions such as “when it comes to solving.” Use complex sentences selectively and check each clause for a complete, accurate structure.
