IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
People have different opinions about competition and cooperation. While some believe that competition against others can bring more success, others argue that cooperation brings better results. In my opinion, cooperation is more valuable than competition because working together builds strong relationships and teamwork which helps us to gain more stability.
On the one hand, competition offers several results in daily life. First, competiting against others motivates individuals to overcome their fears and improve their skills. For instance, students often study harder to get better grades when comparing themselves with others. Similarly, in the workplace, competition can encourage employees to perform better and increase overall productivity.
On the other hand, cooperation creates a far more supportive and effective environment. When people collaborate with others, they can share innovative ideasand solve complex problems. For examples, in school, when students are given a project together, they can share creative ideas with each other to make their work more attracting rather than doing individual task. It brings more success and attention to their project. Furthermore, in offices, employees do much better work in their presentation together rather than single handedly. Consequently, cooperation reduces unnecessary stress and helps to build healthy bondings at school, workplace and in daily lfe.
In conclusion, although competition can help individuals to gain confidence and skills, yet it creates various problems. I believe cooperation is far more important. Working together allow people to solve larger problems in a short span of time and achieve sustainable success.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both sides of the discussion and state a clear preference for cooperation, supported by relevant examples from school and the workplace. The points about competition motivating students and employees are also appropriate. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained: for example, the claim that cooperation brings “more stability” is not developed, and the project example does not clearly explain how collaboration leads to better outcomes beyond sharing ideas. The conclusion briefly acknowledges competition’s benefits but says it “creates various problems” without identifying them. The response is also four words below the required minimum. Develop each main point with a clearer explanation or specific consequence to make the discussion more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for competition and cooperation, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow, and examples are generally placed with the relevant argument. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, links between claims can feel mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Furthermore” and “Consequently,” and some references are unclear: “It brings more success” could refer to the project or to cooperation generally. Use more precise referencing and connect examples explicitly to the point they support.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range for the topic, including “productivity,” “collaborate,” “innovative ideas,” and “sustainable success.” These choices help communicate the main arguments, and the meaning is generally clear. However, several word-choice, collocation, word-form, and spelling problems limit precision: “competing against others” is followed by the misspelling “competiting”; “more attracting” is not the natural form; and “healthy bondings” is an awkward expression. There are also typing or spelling slips in “ideasand” and “lfe.” Aim for natural combinations such as “work collaboratively,” “make the project more engaging,” and “build healthy relationships,” and proofread carefully for spelling and spacing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concessive opening (“While some believe…”) and clauses introduced by “when,” “because,” and “although.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, and the errors do not generally prevent understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. In “Working together allow people,” the subject requires a singular verb (“allows”); “doing individual task” needs an article and plural form (“doing an individual task” or “working individually”); and “employees do much better work in their presentation together rather than single handedly” has an unclear comparison structure. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and parallel comparisons, then check punctuation and sentence boundaries during proofreading.
