IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is argued that competitiion is nice while working, learning and in practices done on daily basis while others think that collaborating with everyone is better than a competition. Cooperation can provide efficient solutions to minor problems that can help in building a civilized society but competition can motivate individuals to achieve their goals and bring new innovations in the market.

A majority of people work hard and smart but few people get successful, why is that? This is because only few individuals have the competing spirit that encourages them to put more efforts in what they are doing helping them achieve their goals. For instance, Elon Musk started working on innovations and technological advancements while being criticized by a lot of people who wanted to stop him but he had the competing spirit in himself due to which he became the richiest person on earth owning a high tech company like Tesla. In addition, competition enables people to bring innovative ideas and invent something beneficial for the general public. For example, during early times cellphone companies were selling keypad phones and competing with eachother to capture the worldwide market instead of giving benefits to the consumers. Apply came in and introduced the most user friendly phone with a touch screen providing one of the best features to the people.

In contrast, a good society is built by the people living in it and how they structure it with eachother's support that requires cooperation as the key element. Suppose, two brothers living in one house have only one passion of having a good car. They both might waste more money if compete with eachother in order to have a better car in the garage than the other brother. However, the issue can be resolved if both cooperate and buy two cars of different categories by accumulating all the investment that both brothers can drive on daily basis.

It is argued that people should cooperate than having a competition and in my opinion competition is a vital element in an individual's life as it can help him in achieving his goals and developing a better product or service that can be beneficial for the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both sides of the discussion and state a clear preference for competition, supported by relevant examples. The Tesla and smartphone examples illustrate how rivalry may encourage effort and innovation, while the brothers’ car-buying scenario explains how cooperation can avoid waste. This meets the task well, but the two views are not developed equally: the cooperation paragraph relies on one hypothetical example and could explain more broadly how collaboration benefits workplaces or schools. Some claims, such as competition being the reason Musk succeeded, are asserted rather than carefully qualified. To strengthen the response, explain the limits of competition as well as its benefits, and make the comparison between the two approaches more explicit before concluding.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting competition, a contrasting paragraph on cooperation, and a conclusion that restates your position. Transitions such as “In contrast” and “In addition” help readers follow the main progression. However, some links are mechanical or unclear. The opening question, “why is that?”, does not connect smoothly to the explanation, and the shift from the brothers’ example to the final opinion is abrupt. References such as “they” and “the other brother” are understandable, but the example’s details make the paragraph less direct. For stronger progression, use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to the argument it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “competing spirit,” “technological advancements,” “innovative ideas,” and “cooperate.” These choices allow you to discuss both personal achievement and social benefits. There are also several inaccurate or unnatural expressions that limit precision, such as “competition is nice,” “in practices done on daily basis,” and “capture the worldwide market instead of giving benefits to the consumers.” Spelling errors, including “competitiion,” “richiest,” “eachother,” and “Apply,” also affect the accuracy of the vocabulary. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe companies as competing “for market share” and products as “benefiting consumers.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while,” “because,” and “if.” Most of the meaning remains clear, and the longer examples show an attempt to express relationships between ideas. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “A majority of people work hard and smart but few people get successful,” the construction “get successful” is not grammatically natural; use “become successful.” The sentence beginning “This is because only few individuals…” also needs the article “a” before “few.” In the brothers’ example, “if both cooperate and buy two cars … by accumulating all the investment that both brothers can drive” has an unclear clause structure. Break such long sentences into shorter units and check articles, verb patterns, and punctuation.
