IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Before starting I want to quote a famous quote of a philospher who said;

"A thing that can make someone dedicae himself for a paarticular purpoe is it's sense to compete."

In real life everywhere there is a competetion.If we go to the markets we can clearly see vendors and traders competeing each other.If we talk about politics, every politician try to defeat his rival and to secure the higher seat. Competetion in schools and colleges is a good exemple of that.So this sense to defeat someone is actually called competetion.Advatage that competetion has is that we try to struggle and work more when we have a rival so it compel us to strive more.

If we talk about the second opinion which we will call the opinion of cooperation has also advantages. I would certainly like to give the example of relative grading in universities where marks depends on collective performance not on individual performance.It also makes sense that if we keep struggling for just ourselves and stop caring about our colleagues who are getting hurt by our more competitive behavious,it would also become a question mark on our collective welfare.According to my opinion both are necessary.If we just keep struggling for ourselves and stop carrying about others it would be considered immoral. It does not meaan that we should just care about collective performance. If we do we are creating a cage for ourselves.The more we think rational the more we grow and more we grow more we grow.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and gives a personal position: competition is presented as motivating people to work harder, while cooperation is linked to collective welfare. The examples of markets, politics, and university grading are relevant, and the conclusion that both approaches are necessary is identifiable. However, the discussion remains partial because the examples are mostly asserted rather than explained, and the relative-grading example does not clearly show how cooperation works. The position also needs more precise development: the final lines about caring for others and “creating a cage” are difficult to connect to a clear argument. Explain the benefits and drawbacks of each view, then support your balanced opinion with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: the response first discusses competition, then cooperation, and ends with a view that both matter. This gives the reader a basic route through the answer. However, progression within the paragraphs is limited, and several ideas are joined by repeated frames such as “If we talk about” and “If we just keep struggling.” The opening quotation is not clearly connected to the argument, while the final repetition, “the more we grow more we grow,” weakens the ending. Use distinct paragraphs for the two views and your opinion, and make each paragraph develop one central point. Clearer links between claims and examples would make the reasoning easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some topic-related vocabulary, including “compete,” “rival,” “collective welfare,” and “relative grading,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes meaning less clear. For example, “competeing each other” should be “competing with each other,” and “secure the higher seat” is an unnatural way to describe political success. There are also frequent spelling errors, including “philospher,” “dedicae,” and “competetion.” Build a more accurate set of expressions for discussing motivation, collaboration, and outcomes, and proofread spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more extended sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If we do we are creating a cage for ourselves.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to process. For example, “every politician try” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “marks depends” also needs agreement; “who said;” uses punctuation incorrectly before the quotation. The sentence beginning “Advantage that competition has is that…” is missing an article and has an unclear structure. Practise accurate agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, and use a wider range of controlled complex sentences. Reading each sentence aloud can help identify awkward or incomplete constructions.
