IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

An increasing number of people stated that competition at schools, jobs or even in daily life is crucial, while others disagreed with this idea, because they believe more in cooperation. From my prespective, I think that competition is crucial because it keeps people motivated to advance their skills and to become better in any field.

On the one hand, the first thing that parents raise their children on is how they can be kind and helpful to their siblings or even to random strangers. In other words, children should learn how to cooperate and work inside a team to help finish any task easier, because with cooperation, everybody will have a chance to share their experiences and thoughts to approach better results. Moreover, children inside every home should cooperate together to help their parent with their home chores, which will train them to be more organized and responsible in the future.

On the other hand, competition is crucial between employees, because it motivates them to be more creative and professional when doing any task. In my opinion, without competition, we will never see any outstanding individuals in any career, because it what makes people be more eager to show the best version of themselves. For instance, many students accidently discovered their hidden talents through school competitions, such as in drawing competitions or musical contests.

In conclution, both competition and cooperation carry benefits to society, but I prefere to keep students and employees encouraged to encourage them to perform more throught fair competitions, which will have a positive impact on the community.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both sides of the discussion and state a clear preference for competition in the introduction and conclusion. The cooperation paragraph gives relevant reasons, including sharing experiences and helping with household chores, while the competition paragraph explains motivation and offers examples of school contests. However, the two views are not developed equally: cooperation is mainly illustrated through children and family life, with less attention to cooperation at work or in wider daily life. Some claims, such as “without competition, we will never see any outstanding individuals,” are broad and would benefit from qualification or support. To strengthen the response, explain more fully when cooperation is valuable and why fair competition is preferable overall.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for cooperation and competition, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the discussion easy to follow. Ideas within each paragraph generally progress from a main point to an explanation or example. However, some links feel mechanical, and the conclusion repeats the preference for competition without clearly synthesising the two arguments. The phrase “which will have a positive impact” also has an unclear reference: it could refer to encouragement or to competitions. Use more precise referencing and vary transitions by showing the relationship between ideas, rather than relying mainly on formulaic paragraph openers.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “cooperate,” “responsible,” “motivates,” “creative,” and “hidden talents,” and the meaning remains clear. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “approach better results,” though this is not a natural collocation; “achieve better results” would be more idiomatic. Several spelling errors—“prespective,” “accidently,” “conclution,” and “prefere”—show that written accuracy needs attention. Some wording is repetitive or imprecise, particularly “crucial” and “any” across the response. Build precision by choosing collocations carefully and proofreading spelling, while retaining the relevant vocabulary you already use.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses with “because,” “which,” and “when.” Most sentences communicate their intended meaning, and the longer sentences show an effort to explain cause and effect. Some grammatical errors remain. For example, “because it what makes people” is missing the verb “is,” and “help their parent with their home chores” has a number mismatch between “parent” and “their.” The sentence beginning “In my opinion, without competition” also shifts from “it” to “we,” making the reference less consistent. Aim to check verb completeness, agreement, and pronoun reference, and break up long sentences when this helps maintain control.
