Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response begins to address the topic by introducing competition and offering one possible benefit: children competing academically may improve their performance. However, it does not discuss the view that people should cooperate, and it gives no clear personal opinion. The example is cut off at “if a two children have a dame,” so the supporting idea is not explained. The response is also substantially below the required 250 words, leaving the task only minimally addressed and preventing the discussion from being developed. To improve, cover both viewpoints, state your position clearly, and support each main point with a complete explanation or relevant example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introductory paragraph is followed by a body paragraph, and “On one hand” signals the start of a viewpoint. The opening also previews that the essay will discuss both perspectives. However, the promised progression does not continue: there is no contrasting paragraph or conclusion, and the final example stops mid-sentence. Connections between ideas are therefore limited, while the opening sentence is difficult to follow because several points run together. Use separate paragraphs for competition, cooperation, and your opinion, and connect each claim to its explanation with clear linking phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some relevant topic vocabulary, including “competition,” “cooperate,” “academics,” and “performance,” so the subject is identifiable. However, the range is narrow and several word choices or forms are inaccurate, such as “completion” where “competition” is intended, “more cooperate” instead of “cooperate more,” and “beneficial thing,” which is not a natural collocation here. Spelling errors such as “beleives,” “childeren,” and “eassy” also reduce accuracy. Build a small set of accurate topic phrases and check spelling and collocations; for example, use “academic performance” and “work together” appropriately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

There is an attempt to use more than simple statements, particularly in “if children compete … it can improve their performance,” which shows an effort to express a conditional relationship. However, control is inconsistent: “some individuals believe … is good thing” is missing an article, “we should more cooperate” has incorrect word order, and “they believes” does not maintain subject–verb agreement. The sentence beginning “For instance if…” is incomplete, and punctuation and capitalisation are unreliable, including the comma splice in the opening. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then add complete conditional sentences and check articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries.
