Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The opening identifies the two positions and gives a clear preference for competition: “I strongly believe that competition is an important and good thing.” This shows an attempt to address the question. However, the response stops after “On the one hand” and an unfinished sentence, so it does not explain the benefits of competition, discuss cooperation, or develop the writer’s opinion with reasons or examples. The task requires at least 250 words, but this response contains only 68 words; the 10 words copied from the prompt are excluded from that count. To improve, complete both sides of the discussion and support your position with specific explanations and examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: the introduction previews a discussion, and “On the one hand” signals the start of a body paragraph. These markers give the reader some indication of the intended structure. However, the essay has no completed argument or conclusion, and the body paragraph ends abruptly with “Since,” leaving the relationship between ideas unclear. The introduction’s promise to discuss both views is not followed through, so progression cannot be established. Plan a clear sequence—introduction, one paragraph for each view, your position, and a conclusion—and use linking expressions only where they connect complete, developed ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some relevant vocabulary, including “competition,” “cooperate,” “competing against each other,” and “human daily lives,” so the topic is recognisable. However, the range is narrow and several word choices, forms, or spellings are inaccurate: “point of views” is not the natural expression, “disscuss” and “explaination” are misspelled, and “increase their work time” does not clearly express a benefit of competition. These issues make the intended meaning less precise. Build a wider set of topic-specific expressions and check spelling and collocations; for example, explain whether competition can raise productivity or motivate people to improve, rather than relying on a vague phrase.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
There is an attempt to use more than simple sentences, as in “Some people believe that …, while other people argue that …,” and the opening is generally understandable. However, grammatical control is uneven. In “we should to try,” the modal should must be followed by the base verb without “to”; “competition is a important” needs the article “an”; and “before the explaination” uses an incorrect article pattern. The final clause, “Since,” is incomplete, and the sentence beginning “This essay will…” does not form a clear grammatical construction around “before the explanation.” Practise accurate modal patterns, articles, and complete complex sentences, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and finished clause.
