Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate about whether competitiveness at work, school and in regular life is a postive thing or individuals need to cooperate more rather than competing against each other. In my point of view, having competition creates the urge to unlock one's full potential and carries more significance although cooperation is a great way of completing task quickly.

On the one hand, competition helps human being to improve their capability continuously in terms of education, occupation and daily lives. Individuals try their best to beat competitors and secure success at the end. This behaviour helps them to unlock their full potential which may not be possible otherwise. For instance, Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi both worked hard throughout their professional football career to be the best player and competition agaisnt each other played a crucial role for their achievement so far.

On the other hand, cooperation is one of the greatest way of achieving success in human history. Cooperating with each other would open the door of several new opprtunities for people and they can fulfill their tasks more comfortably with the help of each other. Moreover, teaming up with others may escalate the thinking capabilities of team members and challenges could be solved more comfortably. For instance, IT sector professionals cooperating each other could come up with better solutions by implementing their knowledge together.

To sum up, cooperative behaviour paves the way of accomplishment more comfortably whereas having competition is the way for individuals to reach the peak of their potential and attain desired outcomes. Therefore, I believe competition is an affirmative thing to have in life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both sides of the question and state a clear preference for competition in the introduction and conclusion. The points about striving to reach one’s potential and the benefits of sharing expertise are relevant, and the football and IT examples help illustrate them. However, the two views are not developed equally: the competition argument is explained through individual effort, while the cooperation paragraph makes broad claims about opportunities and problem-solving without showing in detail how cooperation works in school or everyday life. The examples are also brief, and the conclusion largely repeats the earlier position rather than adding a final insight. To strengthen the response, explain the consequences of each view more fully and connect examples directly to the claims they support. The response meets the required length.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To sum up” makes the progression easy to follow. Within paragraphs, ideas generally move from a claim to an explanation and then an example. However, the linking is somewhat formulaic, and some connections between sentences could be clearer. For example, the cooperation paragraph moves from “new opportunities” to completing tasks and then to “thinking capabilities” without explaining how these points relate. The conclusion also repeats the contrast rather than synthesising it. Use more precise referencing and vary transitions, while making the relationship between each claim and its supporting detail explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including phrases such as “unlock one’s full potential,” “secure success,” and “implementing their knowledge together.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the response includes some topic-specific language about competition, cooperation, and professional achievement. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “regular life,” “the greatest way,” and “cooperating each other.” There are also spelling errors, including “postive,” “agaisnt,” and “opprtunities.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and control. Aim to use more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for instance, “in everyday life” and “cooperate with one another” would express your meaning more idiomatically.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses in “although cooperation is a great way…” and “which may not be possible otherwise.” Most sentences are understandable, and grammatical errors rarely obscure your meaning. Some errors remain in agreement, articles, and sentence patterns. For example, “competition helps human being” needs a plural or article, and “one of the greatest way” requires a plural noun. In “Cooperating with each other would open the door of several new opportunities,” the article and preposition pattern are not well controlled. There is also a missing preposition in “professionals cooperating each other.” To improve, check singular and plural forms, article use, and prepositions, while continuing to practise varied sentence structures.
