Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some individuals argue that competition is beneficial in regular life for both the students and the jobholders. Others argue that people should support each other more, rather than being competitive. I will discuss the both views, but personally I think cooperation makes things more easier and helps people achieve things collectively.

One of the greatest advantages of competition is that people can utilize their full potential. For instance, if there is a reward for being the best employee of the month, many employees try to give their best for achieving the title. Also, any kind of healthy competition make people more connected towards their job or study. If a teacher gives reward to the students who completes the tasks first, they feel much more motivated.

On the other hand, competition might harm people psychologically and mentally. Sometimes individuals get involve in wrongdoings to compete with others. For example, many students starts cheating in the examinations because they think that they can not achieve the desired score without cheating such that they would not be able to compete with others. But if there is no pressure of being the best, people tend to cooperate with each other and it helps them grow collectively. Human are social beings and collective efforts make people achieve things in a more convenient way.

In conclusion, healthy competitions are fruitful for a number of people but it may get stressful over the time. Cooperation connects people together and collective efforts make any difficult works seem easy. I believe that, for the welfare of the society and community, chilldren should be taught cooperation rather than competition.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both sides of the discussion and state a clear preference for cooperation in the introduction and conclusion. The examples of employee recognition and students cheating are relevant and help explain how competition can motivate people but also create pressure. This meets the task well, though the two views are not developed equally: the benefits of competition are mainly illustrated through rewards, while cooperation is asserted to help people achieve collectively without a specific example showing how. The claim that people cooperate when there is no pressure to be the best could also be qualified, since it is presented broadly. To strengthen the response further, explain the mechanisms behind cooperation and support that view with a concrete example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear four-paragraph structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Its progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “For instance,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the discussion’s direction clear. The examples are generally placed beside the points they support. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however: “But if there is no pressure” shifts quickly from cheating to cooperation, without explaining how reducing pressure leads to collaboration. The conclusion also repeats the idea of collective effort rather than drawing together the comparison. Use more explicit links between cause and effect, and vary the way you refer back to the central ideas to make cohesion more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “full potential,” “psychologically,” “motivated,” and “collective efforts.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the discussion of competition and cooperation remains understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “connected towards their job,” “wrongdoings to compete,” and “convenient way.” There are also spelling and form issues, including “chilldren” and “competitions” where the singular idea is intended. Aim for more precise, natural combinations and check spelling carefully. For example, describe employees as “more engaged in their work” and say that cooperation helps people achieve goals “more effectively.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional structures such as “if there is a reward” and a contrast introduced by “although” in the conclusion. Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. Examples include “the both views” (article use), “competition make” and “students starts” (subject–verb agreement), and “people get involve” (verb form). The sentence beginning “If a teacher gives reward to the students who completes…” also has article and agreement problems. There is some control of longer sentences, but accuracy is not consistent across them. Review agreement, articles, and verb forms, then proofread each sentence to ensure that its subject and verb match.
