IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowdays, some people believe that competition is important in work, education and daily life, while others think that corporation is more beneficial. Both view their own advantages and disadvantages. In my opinion, corporation is more important because it helps people achieve common goals and build strong relationships with others.

On the one hand, competition can encourage people to work harder and improve their skills. When students compete with their classmates, they may study more seriously to achieve better marks in examinations. simillarly, employees may try to perform better than their collagues to get promotions or higher salaries. As a result, competition can increase motivation and help people become more confident. For example, students who participate in academic competitions often try to improve their knowledge and abilities. This can also prepare them for future challenges.

on the other hand, cooperation allows people to work together and learn from each other. When people share their ideas and knowledge, they can solve problems more easily. Moreover, teamwork can reduce stress and create a friendly environment at school and in the workplace. For instance, when students compete a group project, they can divide the work according their skills and finish it more effectively. In addition, cooperation teaches people to respect others and understand different opinions. These skills are useful in both personal and professional life.

In conclusion, although competition can motivate people to improve their perfomance, I believe that cooperation is more valuable in the long term because supporting each other can bring better results and create stronger relationships.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both sides of the question and state a clear opinion: cooperation is more important because it supports shared goals and relationships. The competition paragraph gives relevant examples from education and employment, while the cooperation paragraph explains shared problem-solving, reduced stress and respect for different views. This covers the task well. However, some points are asserted rather than fully developed: for example, the claim that competition builds confidence is not explained, and the group-project example could show more specifically how cooperation produces better results. To strengthen the response further, extend key claims with a clear explanation or a more precise example, and connect these points explicitly to your long-term preference for cooperation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that restates your position. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “On the one hand,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. The contrast between competition and cooperation is easy to follow. At times, however, the linking is somewhat formulaic, and the sequence of supporting points can feel like a list. The reference in “This can also prepare them” is understandable but could identify more precisely what “this” refers to. Aim to vary transitions and use clearer links between each example and the point it supports, so cohesion feels more natural and less dependent on signposting phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “motivation,” “promotions,” “teamwork,” “common goals,” and “professional life.” These choices make your main ideas clear, and you attempt some topic-specific expressions. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “corporation” where you mean “cooperation,” “simillarly,” “collagues,” and “perfomance.” Some phrases are also not idiomatic, such as “compete a group project” and “finish it more effectively.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit the accuracy and flexibility of your vocabulary. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for discussing teamwork, competition and achievement.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses beginning “When” and “although,” and most sentences communicate their meaning clearly. There are some grammatical errors, particularly with articles, prepositions and sentence boundaries. For example, “compete a group project” needs a different grammatical pattern, and “divide the work according their skills” is missing “to.” The lowercase starts in “simillarly” and “on the other hand” also show inconsistent sentence punctuation and capitalisation. Work on checking prepositions and articles in longer sentences, and proofread sentence openings and punctuation. Greater control of these details, alongside your existing range of clauses, would make the writing more consistently accurate.
