IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people argue that competing in regular life, at job and at school is beneficial, while other believe that, teamwork is important than competition. This essay will explain both views and I believe that, cooperation has a higher value, as it generates result faster, while competition focus on improving individual briliance.
On the one hand, competition is useful for achieving individual benefits such as, scoring a good academic result, acvhieving the best employee award etc. As a student or a job holder competes with his competitors, he focus on improving his intra-personal skills because these will differentiate him from others. For an example, students try hard to achieve a good result in their exams. As a result, their knowledge improves by studying more, which reflects on their skills and they shine in their future career. Therefore, competetion develops the ability of a man, which is considered as an advantage.
On the other hand, teamwork helps to achieve social and practical skills such as leadership skills, problem solving skills, communication skills and many more, which leads to build a good team, where people work together and face problems as a team. As a result, they solve problems quickly. For example, we had a fund crisis, while organizing a job fair in our campus. We made a team, where everyone was assigned to communicate with different oraganizations for fund raising. We worked as a team and helped each other through guiding, problem solving and communicating and we raised our funds in three days. So, it indicates that cooperation is important for achieving a quick result.
In conclusion, although competetion has several advantages on improving a person's specefic results, cooperation has a higher value, as teamwork leads to quicker outcomings.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a consistent opinion that cooperation has greater value. The competition paragraph gives relevant support through students’ exam preparation and its possible effect on future careers; the campus job-fair example also makes your case for teamwork concrete. This meets the task well, but the development is uneven: the benefits of competition are mostly framed as individual achievement, while the cooperation example explains a specific process and outcome. The claim that teamwork “generates result faster” could be qualified or supported beyond one example, and the comparison between the two approaches could be made more explicit. To strengthen the response further, explain when competition may be useful and how cooperation can complement it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction presents both positions, separate body paragraphs discuss each, and the conclusion restates your view. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the argument, while the job-fair anecdote is placed logically within the cooperation paragraph. Some linking is a little mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “As a result” and “For example.” The long sentence beginning “As a student or a job holder…” also packs several stages of reasoning together, making the progression less smooth. Use a wider range of transitions and clearer references between claims and examples, and divide complex explanations where needed.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “teamwork,” “problem solving,” “communication skills,” and “fund raising,” and you attempt more specific expressions such as “intra-personal skills.” However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less natural: “teamwork is important than competition,” “quicker outcomings,” and “individual briliance” are examples. There are also repeated forms of “competition” and “result,” which limits flexibility. Aim to learn common word partnerships and check spelling carefully; for instance, describe teamwork as “more important than competition,” and say it produces “faster results.” More precise vocabulary would make your ideas clearer and more fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “while,” “because,” and “which,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. However, some grammatical errors recur in comparisons, articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “other believe” needs subject–verb agreement, and “teamwork is important than competition” requires a comparative form. In “As a student or a job holder competes… he focus,” the subject and verb pattern is unclear and agreement is inconsistent. Commas also interrupt phrases unnecessarily, as in “I believe that, cooperation.” Work on accurate comparative structures, consistent singular/plural subjects, and punctuation around clauses. More reliable control of these patterns would allow your complex sentences to communicate the argument more smoothly.
