IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.0)

Some people argue that chasing chairs at work place and childhood competations is good while other believe we need to invest ourself rather than competing with our fellows and collegues. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

You introduce the topic and state a position with “I partially agree,” which shows an attempt to answer the question. However, the response does not meaningfully discuss both views or explain your own opinion: the opening mentions competition’s possible benefits and harms, but neither is developed with reasons or examples. The next sentence begins a point about competition starting at school, then stops mid-thought, so the reader cannot understand the argument. The response is also substantially below the required 250 words, leaving most of the task unanswered. To improve, explain why competition can motivate people, why cooperation can produce better outcomes, and give a relevant example for each before reaching a clear conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5

The opening gives the reader a basic topic and a position, and “Firstly” signals an attempt to begin a supporting point. However, there is no developed paragraph structure or logical progression because the response ends during the first body point. The sentence beginning “Firstly, this race just start…” is incomplete, and the final phrase “such that” leaves the reader expecting information that never follows. The contrast between competition and cooperation is introduced, but the relationship between these ideas is not explained. Organise the essay into an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion; use linking expressions to show contrast and cause, while ensuring each sentence and paragraph is complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You attempt topic-related vocabulary, including “competing,” “beneficial,” “adverse effect,” and “social life,” so the reader can identify the general subject. However, several choices are inaccurate or awkward, such as “chasing chairs,” “childhood competations,” and “invest ourself,” which make parts of the opening difficult to interpret. Spelling errors such as “collegues” and “competations” also reduce accuracy. The range is limited in this short response, and some phrases appear to be direct or imprecise translations rather than natural academic collocations. Build a reliable set of expressions for discussing motivation, shared goals, and workplace or school outcomes, and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both a complex opening sentence and a subordinate clause, as in “because at some place it has both beneficial as well as adverse effect.” This shows an effort to use more than simple sentence patterns, but control is inconsistent. For example, “other believe” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “parents construct the minds of students such that” is unfinished and does not form a complete thought. The sentence beginning “Firstly” also has an unclear structure, making its meaning difficult to follow. Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement, articles, and clause endings. A wider range will be useful once basic sentence accuracy is more secure.
