IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

This is the notion of many people that competing againts each other in different fields like at work, school or in other daily life affairs is benfiacry. But some oppose thier view and believe in coopeartion.

Both these thoughts could have thier own benifits and also drawbacks. So, in my opinion both views could be accepted according to thier prospective.

At first, when there is a competition at certain level, this enhance the ability of hardwork. For exapmle, a group of employees are working together in a office. If they will gain same benifits and same advantages rather then everyone is giving diiferent efforts. So, it's not fair. If a person with high spirit and enthusiasm will watch other employees getting same treatments, he'll surely lower down his energy and efforts. And the person who was at rest and was gaining everything without doing nothing, he'll become more lazy-bluffer.

One the other side, thoughts of copperation are aslo effective in some ways like if someone in a classroom is very dull and inactive and can't get the lecture. Certainly, he needs assistant and help from other fellows to remain engage in classworks and other activies. The cooperation of other fellows with such students will enhance his confidence and no one will get any harm.

As a result, both ideas have thier own benifits and drawbacks according to the field where it applies. So, we could not apply one notion on any particular field according to our own believe, we can impliment according to the situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both competition and cooperation and give a position: you suggest that either can be appropriate depending on the situation. The workplace example explains why unequal effort should not receive identical treatment, while the classroom example shows how peer support can help a struggling student. However, the discussion is only partially developed. The workplace point is difficult to follow because it shifts from competition to fairness in rewards, and the cooperation example is brief. Your conclusion repeats the situational view without clarifying which approach you consider more beneficial overall or giving a clear principle for choosing between them. Develop each side with a more direct explanation and make your own judgement more definite.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on competition, one on cooperation, and a concluding summary. Signposts such as “At first,” “On the other side,” and “As a result” help readers recognise the stages of the discussion. However, progression within the competition paragraph is sometimes unclear: the example begins with employees working together, then moves to equal benefits and differences in effort without clearly explaining how competition operates. Some linking phrases are also mechanical, and references such as “both these thoughts” and “this” are not always precise. Make the relationship between each example and its main point explicit, and use transitions that show the exact contrast or consequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “competition,” “cooperation,” “enthusiasm,” “confidence,” and “drawbacks.” This gives you enough language to communicate the main ideas. However, the range is limited and several spelling errors are noticeable, including “againts,” “benfiacry,” and “coopeartion.” Some word choices or combinations are unclear or unnatural, such as “lower down his energy,” “same treatments,” and “remain engage.” These errors sometimes make the intended meaning harder to follow. Build a more accurate set of topic-related expressions and check spelling carefully; also choose collocations that express your meaning directly rather than translating phrases literally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including conditional forms such as “If a person … will watch other employees…” and a relative clause in “a student … who … can’t get the lecture.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors can make relationships between ideas difficult to understand. For example, “If they will gain same benefits … rather then everyone is giving different efforts” has problems with conditional form, articles, and sentence construction. There are also agreement and verb-form issues in “this enhance” and “he’ll become more lazy.” Practise building accurate conditional sentences and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and clause boundaries. Shorter, controlled sentences would help make your reasoning clearer.
