Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response makes a clear general claim that competition matters and briefly acknowledges cooperation, but it does not adequately discuss both views. Most of the examples focus on archery, and the explanation of why competition is beneficial is unclear; cooperation is mentioned through confidence, skills and teamwork but these points are not explained or illustrated. The conclusion repeats the preference for competition without weighing it against cooperation. The response is also 8 words below the 250-word minimum; the 9 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. To strengthen the answer, explain specific benefits and drawbacks of each approach, support them with relevant examples, and state a more fully reasoned opinion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is some basic organisation: the response opens with the topic, uses “Firstly” and “On the other Hand” to signal a shift, and ends with a conclusion. However, progression is difficult to follow because ideas are repeated or placed together without clear links. For example, the archery discussion moves from school competitions to countries and daily routines, while the paragraph beginning “On the other Hand” shifts between cooperation, competition, exams and teamwork. Several sentences, such as “For example, Work and School,” do not clearly connect to a developed point. Use one paragraph for each view, organise each around a central claim, and make references and transitions show how examples support that claim.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a basic range of topic-related vocabulary, including “competition,” “cooperation,” “confidence,” “skills,” and “team work,” so the general subject is usually recognisable. However, repetition of “competition” and “important” limits variety, and several word choices or collocations are unclear, such as “built a race through out the world” and “a best competition.” Spelling errors including “beleives,” “dialy,” and “compeitition” also reduce accuracy. Aim to use precise terms that express the intended relationship, such as “encourage people to improve” or “work towards a shared goal,” and check spelling and natural word combinations during revision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response mainly uses short, simple statements, with a few attempts to join ideas using “because,” “where,” and “which.” Some sentences communicate a basic point, but grammatical control is inconsistent. Examples include “there are alot of competition,” “There is a lot of competitions,” and “Many people playing it,” which show problems with agreement, countability and verb forms. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also unreliable, as in “Competition plays an important role in society.competition also communicates…” Use complete subject–verb sentences, check singular and plural forms, and practise combining related ideas accurately. Greater control of these basic patterns, alongside a wider range of sentence structures, would make the argument easier to understand.
