Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify several important changes, including the relocation of the marina and fishing boats, the addition of cafés and shops, and the conversion of the southern public beach to a hotel beach. However, the response does not give a clear overview of the harbour’s main development, and some details are inaccurate or unclear: the castle was replaced by a hotel, rather than simply saying a hotel is present “at this place,” and the marina and fishing boats exchange locations, not just “change with the position” of one another. You also say there was only one car park in 2000, although the plan shows two. The claim that popularity increased is not shown by the maps. Select the main changes accurately and summarise them before adding supporting details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response includes relevant comparisons, and phrases such as “In 2000” and “at the present time” help signal a change over time. However, the ideas are presented in one long, loosely connected paragraph, so the reader has to work to distinguish the overview from individual changes. Repeated wording such as “the other thing that change” and “the big change” does not create a clear progression, while the final explanation about popularity is not well linked to the map evidence. Organise the report into a brief introduction and overview, followed by grouped details—for example, changes to facilities and changes to the harbour’s uses. Use clear linking phrases to show comparisons without joining many points into one sentence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant terms, including “Marina,” “fishing boats,” “car parking,” and “public beach,” so the reader can identify several features. However, the vocabulary is limited and some phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “the west side of sea,” “the same thing happens,” and “a lot of change happens.” Repetition of “present” and “change” also limits precision. Use map-reporting vocabulary that describes locations and transformations directly, such as “situated,” “relocated,” “converted,” and “added.” Take care to use the labels accurately: “private beach for the hotel” is more precise than saying the beach is simply private. A wider range of accurate collocations would make the comparisons clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts to connect several ideas in longer sentences, but these structures are often difficult to follow, as in “The big change is that at that place where castle is disused at this place hotel is present.” There are frequent errors in articles, agreement, tense, and sentence boundaries: “Porth Harbour is present” and “the position of Marina … change” are examples. The report also shifts between present and past forms without consistent control. Most sentences rely on simple patterns or are joined with “and” and “but,” limiting grammatical range. Build shorter, complete sentences first, then add controlled comparisons using forms such as “whereas” or “while.” Check articles and verb forms, for example, “the castle was replaced by a hotel.”
