IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a harbour in 2000 and how it looks today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

 

 

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram compares the layout of Porth Harbour in 2000 and how it looks in present day.

Overall, The layout of Porth Harbour remained unchanged, although several new facilities were added and some facilities relocated.

To begin with, some places remained the same for the both years, such as in the north side public beach, passenger ferries, dock and in the west side showers and toilets, two car parks, main road and also in the centre of layout lifeboat block . While some extra same features were reconstructed in current time such as one extra dock added at same place, new showers and toilets added near the big car park, whereas the entry gate of big car park is relocated on the main road side.

Additionally, the marina private yachts block and fishing boats block were relocated to each other locations. New cafes and shops were constructed near the lifeboat, however, castle was replaced by a new hotel and followed by public beach was converted into private beach for the hotel respectively.

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reconstructed,' 'relocated,' and 'converted.' There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'in current time' (should be 'currently' or 'in the present day') and 'to each other locations' (should be 'to each other's locations'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Focusing on more precise collocations related to map descriptions will improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'for the both years' (should be 'for both years'), 'in the north side public beach' (should be 'on the north side, the public beach'), and 'followed by public beach was converted' (which is syntactically awkward).
