Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart displays the map of Porth Harbour in the year 2000 and in present time.

The chart reveals that from 2000 to this day in the present Porth Harbour has a few changes. The disused castle in the south east part has been converted to a hotel. Also it seems the number of people visiting the Porth Harbour is increase as they developed new showers and toilets for the people.

In the year 2000, there seem to have a disused castle in the south east part of the Porth Harbour and there was also a public beach. But in the present day the castle is converted to a hotel and the public beach was converted to a private beach under the hotel.

The chart also reveals that the number of visitors has increased over the years as there is new development of showers and toilets as well as the previous one. It reveals that with increased number of visitors they had to build new facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the harbour, such as the conversion of the castle and the beach, and the addition of facilities. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary of the most significant changes, which is essential for a Band 7 or higher. The description of the visitor increase is somewhat speculative, as the prompt asks to report on the features shown in the plans rather than inferring visitor numbers. To improve, ensure you provide a clear introductory summary of the overall trends and focus strictly on the physical changes depicted in the diagrams.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat repetitive, particularly in the final paragraph where the point about visitors and facilities is restated. The use of cohesive devices is limited and occasionally mechanical (e.g., 'The chart also reveals'). To improve, use a wider range of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly and ensure that each paragraph introduces distinct information rather than repeating previous points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. Phrases like 'in the present time' and 'the number of people... is increase' show limited control over word choice and grammatical form. There is little attempt to use more sophisticated or precise vocabulary related to map descriptions, such as 'transformed,' 'renovated,' or 'extended.' To reach a higher band, focus on using more specific terminology for describing changes in locations and ensure accurate word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains several grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity, such as 'there seem to have a disused castle' (should be 'there seemed to be') and 'is increase' (should be 'is increasing'). The sentence structures are mostly simple, with limited use of complex sentences. To improve, work on subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency when comparing past and present states. Incorporating a wider variety of complex structures, such as relative clauses or passive voice, would also help demonstrate better control.
