Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given plans illustrate about how the Porth harbour has developed since the year 2000.

Overall, over the period, the harbour has completely transformed to include new cafes, shops and hotels.

In 2000, there were two public beaches one on the north side and other on the south. There was a single dock on the western side of the north beach. On the west side it has two areas, one for marina and other for fishing boat, while the showers and toilets were available on near marina area only. Also, the main road was connected to lifeboat with a connecting road and on the south-west, there was an unused castle.

By the present day, new dock is established beside the previous one. While on the western side, the marina and fishing boats’ area are now swapped. In addition to this, now showers, toilets and car parking are available for both the areas, connected by the main road individually. Some changes in terms of new cafes, shops and hotel are seen at the southern coast. Furthermore, one of the public beach is converted to private beach for the hotel customer.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the harbour and provided a clear comparison between the two time periods. You covered the key developments, such as the new dock, the reconfiguration of the marina and fishing areas, and the addition of commercial facilities like cafes and hotels. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide more precise spatial descriptions. For example, instead of saying 'on the west side it has two areas', use more specific directional language to help the reader visualize the layout. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the past and present respectively. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this', 'Furthermore', and 'While', which help the flow of information. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For instance, the phrase 'other on the south' is missing an article, and the connection between sentences in the second body paragraph could be improved to create a more seamless progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'transformed', 'reconfigured', and 'established'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'illustrate about' (which should simply be 'illustrate') and 'connected by the main road individually'. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, you could improve by using more precise descriptive language for geographical features and development changes to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the north beach', 'one of the public beach') and pluralization ('hotel customer' should be 'hotel customers'). There are also some minor punctuation and phrasing issues, such as the missing space after the period in the second paragraph. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the consistent use of articles when referring to specific locations on the map.
