Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the harbour plans, identifying key changes such as the addition of facilities and the conversion of the castle into a hotel. However, the report lacks precision in describing the spatial layout. For instance, the claim that 'passenger ferries location remain same' is inaccurate based on the visual evidence, and the description of the 'four zones' is not clearly linked to the actual changes. While the main features are identified, the overview is somewhat disjointed and lacks a clear, analytical summary of the overall transformation. To improve, ensure that comparisons are more accurate and that the overview highlights the most significant trends, such as the shift from a functional fishing harbour to a more tourist-oriented facility.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the flow of information is often hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. The use of cohesive devices like 'Whereas' and 'However' is sometimes forced or grammatically incorrect, such as starting a sentence with 'However' followed by a run-on structure. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when discussing the 'old harbour design' versus the 'new existence'. To achieve a higher band, focus on using linking words more naturally and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that contributes to the overall progression of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are frequent errors in word choice and collocation that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'new existence' instead of 'new layout' and 'exchanged Marina' instead of 'replaced the Marina'. The phrase 'minimal change made in the dock' is also slightly imprecise. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'yachts', 'ferries', and 'disused', the lack of precision in these terms limits the score. Expanding the range of descriptive verbs and nouns related to urban planning would help convey information more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Subject-verb agreement is a recurring issue, such as 'The diagrams illustrates' and 'cafes & shops has been added'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and incorrect capitalisation. Some sentences are fragmented or lack necessary articles, which makes the text feel unpolished. To improve, focus on basic subject-verb agreement and proofreading for punctuation errors, as these frequent slips distract the reader and lower the overall quality of the writing.
