Student answer (Band 6.0)

The information regarding the changes in harbour took place from 2000 to now is depicted by map.

To commence with, in 2000 showers&toilets and car park were on north west side and are still on same place at present. However, Marine was next to car park which is replaced with fishing boat. On north side, there were area for dack ,passenger ferries and public beaches , at present dack bet expended while rest remained as such on its previous place .

Taking the rest of information into consideration, before car park was on the west south side and was attached to small road which is now attached with main road and new showers&toilets constructed on the above of car park. Fishing boats were next to car park at present which is changed to marina . Next to it ,cafes &shops are built. On the place of castle hotel is constructed .

Overall, it can be vividly seen that many changes can be made on habour from 2000 to now. Some new places builted and old get demolished and some are just replaced with old.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the task by identifying key changes between the two maps. However, the reporting of information is sometimes unclear or inaccurate, such as the confusion regarding the location of the marina and fishing boats. The overview is present but lacks a clear summary of the most significant trends, such as the expansion of facilities and the shift toward tourism-related infrastructure. Some details are under-developed, and the description of locations is occasionally confusing, which hinders the reader's ability to visualize the changes effectively. To improve, focus on grouping features logically (e.g., transport, leisure, accommodation) rather than listing them sequentially.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the flow between ideas is often mechanical and sometimes confusing. While some cohesive devices like 'To commence with' and 'Overall' are used, the internal referencing is weak. For example, phrases like 'rest remained as such on its previous place' are vague and difficult to follow. The logical progression is interrupted by unclear spatial descriptions, making it hard for the reader to track the development of the harbour. Improving the use of cohesive devices to link spatial relationships more clearly would significantly enhance the coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, with some inaccuracies that occasionally impede clarity. Words like 'dack' (likely intended as 'dock') and 'builted' (incorrect morphology) demonstrate a lack of control over word formation. The range is sufficient for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. Phrases such as 'remained as such' and 'on the above of' are unnatural. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more precise terminology for map descriptions, such as 'situated', 'adjacent to', 'transformed into', and 'underwent significant development'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response relies on a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include incorrect verb tenses ('changes... took place'), missing articles ('on north west side'), and incorrect word forms ('builted'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and periods. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors is high enough to cause some difficulty for the reader. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would help improve the accuracy of your writing.
