Student answer (Band 7.0)

The maps compare the changes of Porth harbour take place between 2000 and

today.

All in all. it can be seen that the Porth harbour witnessed a considerable modifications between the given period of time.

To begin with the western part of the harbour, now there is another place for showers and toilets which is built in the southern side. However, the Marina (private yachts) are shifted to the place of the fishing boats and the fishing boats are transferred to that place. Moreover, a new dock is added with the existing ones. Subsequently, some cafes and shops is opened adjacent to the lifeboat station at present. On the other, the disused castle was present in the southeast corner which is now converted into a hotel. Furthermore, the public beach situated in the south side of the eastern part is being used as a private beach of the hotel. Conversely, the beach on the northern part is still open for the general public.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the harbour and provided a clear comparison between the two time periods. You covered the key changes, such as the addition of the hotel, the new dock, and the relocation of boats. However, the overview is slightly weak; while you mention 'considerable modifications', it would be more effective to briefly highlight the most significant trend, such as the shift towards more commercial and tourist-oriented facilities. The response is well-focused on the task requirements and provides a logical summary of the visual data provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, moving from the western part of the harbour to the eastern side. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Conversely' to guide the reader. However, the paragraphing is somewhat limited; the entire body of the report is contained in a single paragraph, which makes it harder to follow the transition between different areas of the map. Breaking the response into two or three distinct paragraphs based on location or theme would improve the flow and structure significantly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'disused', 'adjacent', and 'converted'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'witnessed a considerable modifications' (should be 'considerable modifications' or 'a considerable modification') and 'transferred to that place', which is slightly vague. To reach a higher band, try to use more precise descriptive language for spatial relationships and changes, such as 'redeveloped', 'expanded', or 'transformed'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly without any significant confusion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'some cafes and shops is opened' (should be 'are opened') and 'the Porth harbour witnessed a considerable modifications' (should be 'a considerable modification'). Additionally, the opening sentence 'The maps compare the changes of Porth harbour take place' is grammatically awkward; it would be better as 'The maps compare the changes that took place at Porth harbour'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall communication of the information.
