Student answer (Band 7.0)

The maps compare the changes take place between 2000 and today.

All in all, it can be seen that, the Porth harbour witnessed a considerable modification during the given period of time. The place now has become a tourist spot.

To begin with 2000, there were places for showers and toilets, two car park areas, some Marina( private yachts)and fishing boats in the west part of the harbour. With span of 26 years, now there is a additional place for showers and toilets is built. Moreover, the Marina(private yachts) are shifted to the south side. On the other hand, the fishing boats are transferred to that place.

Moving to the eastern part of the port, a new dock is added to the existed ones. Furthermore, some cafes and shops are recently opened adjacent to the lifeboat station. Subsequently, the disused castle in the southeast corner is converted into a hotel for the tourists along with the public beach which is in the south side are now being used as private beach of the hotel. However, the passengers ferries are remained unchanged.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers the main features of the harbour's transformation, including the addition of new facilities and the relocation of existing ones. You successfully identified the key changes, such as the conversion of the castle and the expansion of the dock. However, the overview is slightly generic. To reach a higher band, ensure the overview highlights the most significant trends, such as the shift from a functional fishing harbour to a more tourist-oriented facility. While you mention the passenger ferries remain unchanged, some comparisons could be more precise, such as specifying the exact locations of the new cafes relative to the lifeboat station.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by grouping the changes more thematically (e.g., facilities vs. infrastructure) rather than just by location. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'transferred to that place', which could be more explicitly stated to improve flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'considerable modification', 'disused', and 'adjacent'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'existed ones' (should be 'existing ones') and 'With span of 26 years' (should be 'Over a span of 26 years'). The use of parentheses for 'private yachts' is acceptable but slightly informal for an academic report. To improve, try to integrate these descriptive terms more naturally into your sentences rather than relying on parenthetical explanations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'changes take place' (should be 'changes that took place'), 'is a additional place... is built' (a redundant verb structure), and 'the passengers ferries are remained unchanged' (incorrect passive voice). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading of verb tenses and article usage to achieve a higher band score.
