IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a harbour in 2000 and how it looks today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
the given diagrams compare the changes that Porth Harbour had undergone from 2000 to present.
Overall, the harbour has been redeveloped with many new facilities which can benefit the visitors in numerous ways.
Delving deeper into details, more passenger ferries and an additional dock has been added on the north side of the area since 2000. Moreover, the space for Marina and fishing boats has exchanged their locations switching private yachts to the south-west and fishing boats to north-west.
At present, additional showers and toilets have been constructed on the west side of harbour than were available in 2000. Furthermore, Castle occupied the south-east portion of the harbour in 2000 which was demolished and has now been replaced with a hotel. Today, cafes and shops have been structured in close proximity to the local road at the center of harbour. There are no major changes close to the public beach but private beech on the south side is now allocated to the hotel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all key features of the harbour plans, including the addition of facilities, the relocation of boat areas, and the replacement of the castle with a hotel. The overview is clear and identifies the main trend of redevelopment. However, the report could be improved by grouping information more logically rather than listing changes sequentially. For instance, separating infrastructure changes (docks, roads) from commercial/leisure developments (hotel, shops) would provide a more analytical approach. While the main features are reported, the comparison between the two time periods is sometimes slightly mechanical. Overall, it provides a satisfactory summary of the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, moving from an overview to specific details. Paragraphing is used, though the body paragraphs could be better balanced. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'At present' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly repetitive. The progression of information is generally clear, though the transition between the discussion of boat locations and the addition of facilities could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally accurate, helping the reader follow the changes described across the two maps.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common items like 'redeveloped', 'demolished', and 'in close proximity'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'beech' instead of 'beach' and 'exchanged their locations' which is slightly unnatural in this context. The range is sufficient to convey the necessary information, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band. Improving collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would enhance the lexical quality.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the space for Marina and fishing boats has exchanged their locations' (subject-verb agreement/preposition usage) and 'additional showers and toilets have been constructed... than were available' (incorrect comparative structure). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. The use of passive voice is appropriate for describing changes to a site, but the overall control of complex structures could be more consistent to reach a higher band.
