Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is fundamentally flawed because it describes a line graph about social center activities instead of the provided task, which asks for a description of harbour plans. Consequently, the content is entirely irrelevant to the prompt. While the student attempts to report trends and figures, these are based on a completely different data set. According to the IELTS descriptors, a response that is off-topic or does not address the task requirements cannot be awarded a passing score for Task Achievement. To improve, ensure you carefully read the prompt and examine the visual data provided before beginning your writing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into a single paragraph, which lacks logical structure. While there are some attempts at cohesive devices such as 'Overall' and 'afterward', the lack of paragraphing and the disjointed nature of the sentences make the flow difficult to follow. The progression of ideas is hindered by the fact that the content does not relate to the task at hand. To improve, you should use clear paragraphing—typically an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs—and ensure that cohesive devices are used to link related ideas logically rather than just listing data points.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is repetitive and sometimes inaccurate, such as 'qual' (likely meaning 'equal') and 'surges' used in a grammatically incorrect context. There is a limited range of vocabulary, and the word choices are often basic or misused. For example, 'initiated' is used repeatedly. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider range of vocabulary, including synonyms and more precise terms for describing trends, such as 'commenced', 'fluctuated', or 'remained stable'. Focus on using words that accurately describe the visual information provided in the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'attendees was'), tense consistency (e.g., 'initiate' instead of 'initiated'), and sentence structure (e.g., 'afterward it the figure of attendees surges'). Many sentences are poorly constructed, making the meaning unclear. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree and that tenses are used consistently throughout the report. Proofreading your work for these common errors before finishing is essential for achieving a higher score.
