Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this report I am going to describe graph . The graph below shows the comparison between harbour look in 2000 and harbour today look.

In 2000 at the East side of Main road there was a Showers and toilet , car park and private yachts also. Opposite to it there was also a car park and fishing boat area. There was also a road at south side of car parking which leads to life boat and castle . There was also a public beach at West side of Castle . Two boats were available for people.Today the private yachts area is replaced by fishing boat area and three roads are drawn from Main road . Cafes and Shops are also build near life boat area which is a good facility for people Surprisingly the castle is replaced with hotel. Numbers of boats are increased from two to three.

In conclusion, there is a great change in today look of harbour from his 2000 look.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the harbour in 2000 and the present day. However, the overview is very weak, consisting of only one sentence that does not highlight the most significant changes, such as the shift from a fishing-focused area to a more commercial/tourist-oriented one. While the response identifies key changes like the hotel and the new cafes, the description of the layout is somewhat disjointed. To improve, you should provide a clearer summary of the overall transformation in the introduction or conclusion and ensure that the comparison between the two time periods is more analytical rather than just a list of features.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into three paragraphs, which is a standard structure. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical. The use of cohesive devices is limited, relying heavily on simple connectors like 'There was also'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the phrase 'Opposite to it', where the antecedent is not explicitly defined. To achieve a higher band, you should use a wider range of linking words and phrases to connect sentences and ideas more fluidly, and ensure that your paragraphing clearly separates the overview, the 2000 description, and the present-day description.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on basic terms like 'look', 'area', and 'good facility'. There are also some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'harbour today look' and 'three roads are drawn'. To improve, you should aim to use more sophisticated vocabulary related to urban planning and spatial description, such as 'transformed', 'converted', 'redeveloped', or 'adjacent'. Additionally, ensure you use correct terminology for map features to enhance the professional tone of your report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'In this report I am going to describe graph' (missing article), 'Cafes and Shops are also build' (incorrect verb form), and 'there is a great change in today look' (incorrect possessive/adjective usage). These errors are noticeable but do not generally impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, the correct use of articles, and ensuring that your verb tenses are consistent when describing past and present states.
