Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps in image are of the Porth Harbour in 2000 in comparision with today. It demonstrates the changes that have ocurred in following years.

In 2000, there was only one dock present for the passenger ferries, but with advancement and growth in recent times it has been doubled. Alongside, there has been development in shower and toilet areas and formation of cafes and shops. The castle that used to be just a piece of attraction is now redeveloped as a hotel, owning its private beach for the tourists to enjoy. The areas of Marina for private yachts and Fishing boats have been altered in the span of these years. Additionally, the car park that used to be connected with the beach road has now been connected with the Main Road, so as to eschew the unwanted traffic gathering in sch spots.

Beside all these things, some places like public beach and lifeboat spaces still remains the same.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the harbour, such as the expansion of docks, the conversion of the castle, and the changes to the car park. However, the report lacks a clear overview, which is essential for a Band 7 or higher. While you mention some changes, you do not provide a summary of the most significant trends or the overall transformation of the area. Additionally, some descriptions are slightly vague; for instance, stating the marina and fishing boat areas have been 'altered' without specifying how (e.g., relocated or expanded) limits the clarity of the report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, moving from an introduction to specific changes and then to features that remained unchanged. You use some cohesive devices like 'Alongside', 'Additionally', and 'Beside all these things' to link ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is a bit abrupt, and the use of 'Beside all these things' is slightly unnatural in an academic context. The progression of information is generally clear, but the paragraphing could be more balanced to improve the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redeveloped', 'eschew', and 'advancement'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'sch spots' is a typo, and 'owning its private beach' is not the most natural way to describe a hotel's amenities; 'featuring' or 'providing' would be better. The phrase 'piece of attraction' is also non-standard. To reach a higher band, focus on more precise collocations and ensure spelling accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'The maps in image are' (missing article 'the'), 'in following years' (missing 'the'), and 'lifeboat spaces still remains' (subject-verb agreement error). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You have attempted some complex structures, but the control over these is inconsistent. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
