Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the changes between the two maps, but it fails to provide a clear, accurate overview of the main features. While it mentions some elements like the beach and the car park, the description is fragmented and lacks precision. For example, stating that the castle was exchanged for a hotel is inaccurate based on the visual evidence, and the claim that the size remains constant is not supported by the diagrams. The response lacks a clear selection of key features, and the information provided is often vague or confusing, which prevents the reader from forming a clear picture of the changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression of ideas is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as the phrase 'in another today's diagram shown', which disrupts the flow. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to follow which part of the map is being discussed. While there is an attempt at an introduction and conclusion, the internal structure of the body paragraphs lacks the necessary coherence to effectively compare the two time periods. The transition between ideas feels disjointed.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'things', 'places', and 'diagram'. There are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'steadily grow up' and 'achievements happens'. The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe map features (e.g., 'exchange the things like castel from hotel'). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the information with the necessary precision required for an Academic Task 1 response, and the errors occasionally make the meaning difficult to interpret.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'pictures clearly demonstrates', 'their is some development happened'), article usage, and sentence structure. The attempt at complex sentences is often faulty, leading to run-on or fragmented thoughts. While the meaning is generally discernible, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar structures limits the score. The control over punctuation and sentence construction is insufficient for a higher band.
