Student answer (Band 6.0)

The following diagram give us the plans showing a harbour in 2000 and how it looks in present.

Overall, castle has been updated to hotel. Some additions of cafe and shops, showers and toilets has been made. The switching of fishing boats and marina has been shown. Moreover, the public beach, showers and toliets, car parks and lifeboat remains the same.

To what I see, updates has been made to harbour. In the West, there is the addition of another showers and toilets. In 2000, the marina which is basically private yachts, was located in the North of harbour but in present it is positioned to the South. Similarly, fishing boats were located to the South of harbour but today it is shifted to the North.

Furthermore, the castle which was disused has been replaced by a hotel near the private beach, which is reserved for the hotel. Near lifeboat, cafes and shops has been introduced. In 2000, there was only one area for dock but in today's plan one more dock has been built.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the harbour plans well. You have successfully identified the key changes, such as the conversion of the castle to a hotel, the relocation of the marina and fishing boats, and the addition of new facilities. The overview provides a clear summary of the transformation. However, some descriptions are slightly imprecise, such as 'To what I see', which is not appropriate for an academic report. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are clearly linked to the specific locations and that the overview is more formal in tone. Overall, you have addressed the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the changes. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Similarly' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel slightly abrupt. The referencing is generally clear, but the paragraphing could be improved by grouping the 'unchanged' features more distinctly from the 'changed' features to enhance the logical progression. The use of cohesive devices is sufficient but could be more varied to improve the overall flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'disused', 'positioned', and 'introduced'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'The switching of fishing boats' (should be 'The relocation' or 'The swapping of positions') and 'in present' (should be 'at present' or 'currently'). There is also a minor spelling error ('toliets'). To improve, try to use more precise vocabulary related to spatial changes and avoid informal phrasing. The range is sufficient to convey the meaning, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement, such as 'The following diagram give us' (should be 'gives'), 'updates has been made' (should be 'have'), and 'cafes and shops has been introduced' (should be 'have'). Additionally, 'the public beach... remains' should be 'remain' to agree with the plural subjects. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
