Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to describe the changes between the two plans, but it fails to provide a clear overview or a structured summary of the main features. While some elements are mentioned, such as the addition of cafes and shops, the description is fragmented and lacks a logical comparison between the two time periods. The response does not effectively highlight the key transformations, such as the conversion of the disused castle area or the shift from a functional fishing harbour to a leisure-oriented facility. Consequently, the information is not presented in a way that allows the reader to easily grasp the overall changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The essay lacks a clear logical progression. The paragraphing is ineffective, with ideas grouped haphazardly rather than following a coherent structure (e.g., introduction, overview, and detailed body paragraphs). Cohesive devices are largely absent or misused, making the transition between sentences and ideas jarring. For example, the shift from describing the 2000 harbour to the current one is abrupt and lacks a clear signpost. The referencing is often unclear, and the overall arrangement of information does not facilitate a smooth reading experience.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary is very limited and often inaccurate. There are frequent errors in word choice, such as 'bitch' instead of 'beach', 'bating' instead of 'bathing', and 'roaming' to describe yachts. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe the visual information precisely, relying on basic and repetitive language. The misuse of terms like 'capturing the fish' and 'proper manner' further hinders the clarity of the response. To improve, the student needs to focus on learning topic-specific vocabulary related to maps and urban development.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. Sentence structures are mostly simple and frequently incomplete or run-on. There are significant issues with subject-verb agreement, article usage, and tense consistency (e.g., 'they have also hotel for living'). Punctuation is also problematic, with many sentences lacking proper structure. The lack of complex sentence structures and the high frequency of basic errors mean that the writing does not demonstrate a sufficient level of control for higher band scores.
