The plans below show a harbour in 2000 and how it looks today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

 

 

Student answer (Band 8.5)

The maps illustrate the transformation of Porth Harbour from 2000 to the present day. Overall, the harbour has undergone extensive modernization, transitioning from a commercial fishing and transport hub into a leisure-oriented tourist destination. While infrastructure like the main road and ferry terminals remains intact, key traditional features have been repurposed or replaced by recreational amenities.

In 2000, the western sector was divided between a marina for private yachts and a dedicated fishing boat zone, supported by adjacent showers, toilets, and two car parks. In the present day, the fishing facilities have been relocated to the far north-west, accompanied by a newly built amenities block. This relocation allowed the original fishing zone to be absorbed by the marina, significantly expanding its capacity for private vessels.

Development is equally pronounced along the southern edge. The historical castle on the south-eastern promontory has been demolished to make way for a hotel, and the nearby southern beach has been converted from public to private access. Furthermore, a row of cafes and shops has been constructed alongside the main road to cater to visitors. Conversely, the northern public beach, the lifeboat station, the dock, and the passenger ferry service in the north-east have been preserved without modification
