Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to describe the changes to Porth Harbour between 2000 and the present day, noting some key additions such as the private beach, cafes, and shops. However, the report falls short in several key areas. Crucially, the student fails to report major structural shifts shown on the maps, such as the complete swapping of locations between the fishing boats and the private yacht marina, or the replacement of the disused castle with a hotel. Furthermore, the overview is extremely basic and lacks a clear summary of the overall transformation. The tone also lapses into inappropriate informality and direct address ('if you want to plan for night stay'), which is unsuitable for an Academic Task 1 report. This level of task coverage aligns with a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is divided into paragraphs, but the logical flow and paragraphing are poorly managed. For instance, the introduction is followed by an abrupt 'overall' statement that mixes general description with specific details. Cohesive devices are basic and repetitive, with over-reliance on simple conjunctions like 'and' ('...extra car park and shower and toilets and the most vital thing is cafes and shops...'). Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as 'while others are ame as previous' without specifying what 'others' refers to. While there is a recognisable attempt to structure the response, the mechanical use of cohesive devices and weak progression limit the score to a Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, featuring frequent spelling and word-choice errors. Examples include 'ocoured' (occurred), 'usefull' (useful), 'ame' (same), 'nort east' (north-east), and 'yatchs' (yachts). The student attempts some task-specific vocabulary related to the maps (e.g., 'marina', 'passenger ferries', 'private beach'), but the restricted range and persistent lexical errors mean the vocabulary is only minimally adequate for the task. This performance fits the descriptors for a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response contains a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and coordination. Attempts at more complex structures often result in grammatical errors, faulty punctuation, or run-on sentences, such as 'In 2000 there is a main road and it splits into two passages, in the nort east there is located a shower and toilets...' Verb tense control is also inconsistent, shifting inappropriately between past and present descriptions. Frequent errors in grammar and punctuation cause some difficulty for the reader, which is characteristic of a Band 5.0.
