Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe the changes to Porth Harbour between 2000 and the present day. However, it fails to provide a clear or accurate overview of the main trends. The student notes several alterations, such as the swapping of the marina and fishing boats, the addition of cafes and shops, and the replacement of the disused castle with a hotel. Nevertheless, the description is severely hindered by dense, highly confusing phrasing (e.g., 'entered the south gate main road turne East side') and inaccuracies in reporting spatial relationships. Important developments, such as the changes to the beach areas and the docks, are muddled and difficult to follow. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, leading to a Band 5.0 rating.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is divided into paragraphs, but the internal logical progression is severely disrupted. Sentences often lack coherent connections, making it extremely difficult for the reader to follow the spatial descriptions. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or incorrectly (e.g., 'Consequently', 'Therefore', 'Hoeever'), and referencing is frequently unclear, as seen in vague phrases like 'remaining things are similar in now and before'. Paragraphing is attempted, but because the sentences within them jump disjointedly between different parts of the map without clear structure, the organizational flow does not extend beyond a basic level. This corresponds to a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very limited and basic, with frequent lexical errors that impede communication. While the student attempts some task-specific terms drawn from the prompt (such as 'harbour', 'marina', 'fishing boats', 'lifeboat', and 'hotel'), words are frequently misused or distorted, as seen in phrases like 'marine private yachts replaced the positions' and 'castle disuesd'. Word formation and spelling errors (e.g., 'entred', 'turne', 'Hoeever') occur throughout the response. The restricted control over vocabulary and collocation places this text firmly at a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, relying heavily on fragmented, poorly constructed sentences. There is an almost complete lack of accurate complex structures. Simple sentences are frequently ungrammatical or lack essential components, such as main verbs or correct prepositions (e.g., 'before showers and toilets are not availabe below the car park while today located in porth harbour'). Tense usage is inconsistent and confused when switching between past and present descriptions. Frequent basic errors in punctuation and syntax cause significant strain for the reader, matching the descriptors for Band 4.0.
