Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by highlighting the main changes between 2000 and the present day at Porth Harbour. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, mentioning the addition of new facilities such as showers, toilets, cafés, and shops, as well as the relocation of the fishing boats and marina, and the replacement of the castle with a hotel. However, the response contains several inaccuracies and vague descriptions regarding specific locations, such as confusing the placement of car parks and road layouts. The progression is somewhat hampered by imprecise reporting of features. Consequently, the response satisfies the basic requirements of the task but falls short of fully and accurately developing all key information, earning a band score of 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is divided into four paragraphs, attempting to separate the introduction, overview, and specific spatial details of the south and north sides. However, the logical progression is weak and the overall arrangement is disjointed. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'First of all, there is no location change' and 'Apart from that', which creates a mechanical feel. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to follow which exact area or facility is being described. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion fails to guide the reader smoothly through the spatial comparison. This performance aligns with the descriptors for a band score of 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses a very limited and repetitive range of vocabulary, such as 'appears', 'change', and 'location', which are frequently misspelled or misused. There are noticeable lexical errors, including 'shower and toilets', 'Cafe's', 'east-south site', and 'boart parking add', which reveal a lack of control over word formation and pluralization. While the basic topic vocabulary of a harbour map (e.g., marina, fishing boat, hotel, beach) is present, the inaccurate word choices and frequent spelling mistakes cause some strain and difficulty for the reader. This performance reflects the criteria for a band score of 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The writing exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at more complex structures or descriptive clauses frequently result in serious grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'The map illustrates the what the Porth Harbour looked at 2000 and what the trend of change happen'. There are frequent errors in verb tenses, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'some new facilities... is appears', 'the entrance and exit was on road but fron naow it shit from main road'). These errors are frequent and often cause difficulty for the reader, placing the response firmly at a band score of 4.5, rounded to 5.0 according to standard half-band practices or warranting a solid 4.5 based on density of errors.
